Lord, I’ve been out of work now for 5 months,

But it seems like an eternity. 

I know that millions of people all over the world

Are in a similar predicament, or much worse …

No job, no home of their own,

Maybe with expenses that they can no longer afford. 

But this doesn’t make my situation any easier to bear …

The frustration, the boredom, the feelings of helplessness,

The knowledge that, although I have knowledge and skills to offer,

No-one seems to want or need me.

The feeling that I’m over the hill, on life’s scrap-heap,

The days and weeks stretching out emptily before me. 

The time, money and energy spent sending off application after application,

But getting back rejection after rejection,

Or, worse still, being ignored completely.   

Wondering just what I must do to get work. 

I know that I’ve often complained about my jobs in the past,

And that I’ll probably complain about my next one,

For surely there will be a next one,

One day, however long I must wait,

As you are a God who provides, the Jehovah Jireh of Abraham. 

You have provided for me in the past

And will do so again, in Your good time. 

There is doubtless a good reason for all this delay,

Although I don’t now know what it is …

Perhaps you want me to get completely relaxed

In preparation for what lies ahead.

But now please give me continued patience and faith,

Give me the strength to persevere,

No matter how hopeless things may seem,

To cope with the dark days, when hope is at its lowest ebb.

In the meantime you have given me the gift of time.

Help me, Lord, to make the best use I can of this gift,

And to leave the rest to You.
