Have you ever wondered how we got the Bible and why we believing ones trust in the Scriptures? After all, aren’t there lots of other books, writings and records, newly found scrolls and other articles of antiquity that contradict what is in the “holy writ”? Not to mention what others have to say about the “good book”. What makes us believe the Bible is the Word of God? The simple truth is, the testimony within the verses themselves gives us just cause.
I’m pretty sure if I wanted to find out about you, you wouldn’t be too impressed if I began by seeking other people’s opinion of you. Suppose I were to initiate my search with people who do not care for you or who do not believe in you. I imagine you would have wanted me to come to you first. That would be the fair and honest approach. Shouldn’t we allow a similar deference to the Scriptures?
I would like to take some time to impart to you supreme confidence in the truthfulness and reliability of God’s holy word to the end your heart is safe in the comfort of the Scriptures and your belief in His Word might remain steadfast. Additionally, that your trust in God’s unfailing promises would become ever more fruitful.
There are a few foundational verses we ought to acquaint ourselves with regarding God’s integrity. The first one is in the Book of Numbers.
Numbers 23:19 and 20:
God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.
Men may lie and do lie, intentionally or unintentionally, but God does not lie. We are going to always get the straight truth from God. We may not like it but nevertheless, it will always be the truth. It also tells us men do lie. It doesn’t take much effort to find out that the words of men can be unreliable. Perhaps you may have even lied to yourself a time or two. That’s not meant as an indictment, just the truth of the matter.
The next one is in the epistle to Titus.
Titus 1:2:
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
Here we are told God cannot lie. This scripture references eternal life. Isn’t it wonderful news to know that promise of God is assured? He surely has blessed and it cannot be reversed!
Let’s look at one more in this category of God’s veracity in Hebrews.
Hebrews 6:17 and 18:
Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath;
That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
In this witness of the testimony of the work itself, we have read...God is not a man that he should lie; God, who cannot lie; and it is impossible for God to lie. Based on these alone, we have every reason to trust in the Scriptures. However, I will give you one more verse from Jesus himself regarding this wonderful Word of Truth in his prayer to the Father regarding those that would believe on him.
John 17:17:
Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth.
Taking this one step further, in the Second Epistle of Peter, he is aware of his immanent death, and in this vital letter, Peter assures the brethren and exhorts them to remain firm.
2 Peter 1:15 and 16:
Moreover I will endeavor that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.
For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
Next he wants to also assure them of the integrity of the Word of God and how it was given from the beginning of its writing.
2 Peter 1:20 and 21:
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost [Spirit].
God who is “not a man that he should lie”, “cannot lie” and for whom it is “impossible to lie” is the author of this venerable word. These holy men of His choosing and anointing then wrote it down.
In a deeper exploration of this divine process, we should the go to Gospel of Luke. There are other gospels in the Bible. Gospel simply means “good news”. We are looking into the good news from the wonderful physician and travel companion of the great Apostle Paul.
Luke 1:1:
Foreasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us.
In the opening verse of this gospel God tells us why Luke is writing and what it is God wanted accurately recorded and taken note. It begins with the word “foreasmuch” indicating the reason which is “many have taken in hand.” It also indicates a lack of success in capturing God’s sacred purpose.
There were a lot of people who wanted to write about Jesus. This was “front page” news! Some wanted to record their thoughts, their wonderment of this man of miracles. Others may have had a different reason or agenda, some good, some bad. If I had been there I probably would have wanted to write something myself. We have writings today from a historical viewpoint. Some wrote from a religious and personal perspective while others reported from a political slant.
The words “set in order” mean a sequential building that is not necessarily chronological. The point is really a “step by step” development on how the disciples of Christ believed what they believed and walked with God as the did church of the 1st century. The Book of Acts, written by this same man of God’s anointing, records the maturing of the believers and growth of the church as the Word of God “grew and prevailed”. One can easily see that beyond being a good writer, Luke had to have an anointing of God for the express purpose his scribal duties.
To make this even more emphasized, the words “most surely believed” are “fully persuaded” in the Aramaic. This good news is in the Bible so that we may truly believe and be completely persuaded of the exact same things that Peter, John, Matthew, Mark, Paul, Luke and others...without a doubt believed!
Luke 1:2:
Even as they delivered them unto us which from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word;
In Colossians 4:14, Luke is referred to as the “beloved physician”. Isn’t God absolutely brilliant to have chosen Luke for this sacred duty? The word “eyewitnesses” is the Greek word, transliterated as autoptsis. It comes from the words auto or in English “self” and optsis, where we get the word “optic” or “see”. It is “See for yourself. (If you ever wondered what an autopsy is for it is too see for yourself). Take a look at the Word of God, the Bible and see for yourself!"
Luke 1:3:
It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write in order, most excellent Theophilus,
Have you ever met anyone who had “perfect” understanding of anything much less perfect understanding of all things? The word translated “from the very first” means "from above"? That is the only place we can get a perfect understanding, from above, God’s realm. That is where the understanding came from as it was revealed to Luke...from above and in order. Theophilus is a name that means – beloved of God. God didn't intend this revelation to be to only one man, rather, to all who would read and believe; to all those who would come and see for themselves.
Luke 1:4:
That thou mightiest know the certainty of those things, where in thou hast been instructed.
There is a reason why we have the Bible and why we so trust in the Scriptures. We believe the very same things that other wonderful men and women of God believed. We are certain of its truth and assured of the same result and fruitfulness in its unfailing promises.
There are many books, scrolls and other writings on every topic one can imagine. If our pursuit is God and the path of life, let us come to the words from above and receive the God's Truth. Let the church of the 1st century lead the church of the 21st. Let us follow in those things, which are “most surely believed among us”.
