Really and truly knowing God unfolds a dual understanding about two different persons... you and God. In getting to know God, not only do you gain the true knowledge of who He is, but even more so, you acquire the knowledge of who you really are in His eyesight. Many think that, simply becoming familiar with God as He is dicatated through His word via the Sunday message or mid-week Bible study, is getting to know God. But, contrary to this mindset, coming to know God involves coming into the true knowledge of who you are and what God desires you to become. (ref: Ephesians 4:19-32)
When one really receives revelation of the word of God; the Spirit of the word reveals to the person their true condition as they are in the sight of God. This is especially true during times when God is dealing with a person to mold and make them after His own way. This is the process in being changed from glory to glory and becoming more and more like Him. (2 Corinthians 3:17-18)
Until a genuine encounter with God is experienced, a person simply accessorizes themselves with what they deem to be 'Jesus-esque' and are not fully clothed with Christ. They retain the identity of who they have become during their lives in sin and apart from God; a life that was totally under the influence of satan and evil spirits according to Ephesians 2:1-3. And after having come to God through salvation, and not coming into their true identity as revealed through God's word, they simply put on those things (religious accessories) that are conducive to the image they desire to maintain (with all things bearing a connection to the 'old man' and hisdiggy insurance deeds).
Believers must understand that a God-given identity can only be defined by God; you can't give it a label, or dictate what you think comprises the identity of what a son of God is. It's not left to us to define. Otherwise, God would not have been so explicit throughout His word where He defines what a true child of God is. He, better than anyone else, can tell us what a true child of God looks like, acts like and thinks like. And until we get to know who God really is, we will continue to walk and behave as we have always thought and felt and we will continue to remain that creation that begs for His redemption; a fallen creature, a weakened being, a defeated soul, and a lost powerless child.
James 1:18-25 -
Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed."
