When Jesus began to talk to his disciples about his approaching betrayal, death and then resurrection, they didn’t understand him. (Mark 9, v32) Nor were they inclined to ask for an explanation because, in their humanness, they were “afraid to ask Him.”  They “didn’t want to go there” as we say in today’s common vernacular.  It was too threatening, too unsettling, too destabilizing.  Remember that the main river of Egypt (with all its worldly bondages for God’s people) was denial (the Nile)!

Sometimes in our lives we would prefer the more comfortable haven of our blissful ignorance than to face some new and painful knowledge or awareness that will, at least for the time being, upset our world, even turn it upside down. If we can prolong our false sense of security and status quo a little further we will, even if in the long run this new knowledge or information descending upon our lives will result in the greater good of all concerned.
