As Americans, we don’t particularly like kings. Our forefathers rebelled, and now we have Federal, state, county and local governments. Our Declaration of Independence, our Constitution, and our Bill of Rights are unique documents that no other country can boast about. Americans enjoy a freedom that no other people on Earth experience. No wonder so many try to cross our borders. However, America is now 240 years old, and she seems to be dying. After almost two and a half centuries, we’ve discovered that all we did was replace one sovereign ruler with an ever-burgeoning bevy of bungling bureaucrats who want to regulate just about everything we do. Sure, it’s still the best country on earth, but the ruling elites have abandoned the core principles upon which this nation was founded and are more concerned about political correctness than truth, justice, and the American way. The wheels are coming off the bus that brought us here; so much so that many Americans worship the hand that feeds them – Uncle Sam. Half the people of this great land despise our leaders, while the other half love them, as long as the benefits keep filling their personal coffers. Our current state of affairs reeks, and it reminds me of what happened in ancient Israel:

I Samuel 8:4-9 NIV 4 So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.” 6 But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”

Samuel warned them that the king would take their sons to fight or farm on lands he takes, their daughters to cook and clean, and some of their servants and animals as his own. Yet, they demanded to have a king. However, after experiencing a corrupt leader, they went back to Samuel, acknowledged their mistakes, and begged him to pray for them to his God:

1 Samuel 12:19-20 NIV 19 The people all said to Samuel, “Pray to the Lord your God for your servants so that we will not die, for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king.” • 20 “Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. 21 Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless.”

The only way for America to recover is for a wholesale return to the Lord. Our sins are many, including making government an idol, but our God – the God of Israel who sent Jesus to die for our sins – offers grace where sin abounds. We will not make America great again nor be stronger together by pulling one lever over another in a voting booth. The people of America need a Holy Spirit driven revival for hearts, lives, neighborhoods, cities, counties, states, and a nation to be changed for the good of all. America stands in the need of prayer. May God bless the United States of America with leaders that love Him so that, as she did in the past, she will bless the world in the future with the grace and compassion that comes only from knowing and following Jesus. So be it!
