Encouragement
Angels float very much around the surface of this earth not as fancy, fairy or spiritual beings but in the very guise of us human beings.
We encounter them every day at some fork in the road of life. They may either appear out of nowhere to aid us and then vanish without a trace or they maybe from our own circle and contacts of friends and relatives.
At the right and appointed time, they will be at our side to lend a helping hand. They carry no magic wand but we can surely recognize them as angels nominated by our Lord.
Some may just share a smile and lift our spirits. Others stand by us silently in solidarity. A few may warm us with their loving words of care and concern and certain angels just stand by us. Their presence is enough to give us strength and courage making us brave.
When we read the Bible, we see so many instances of Angels being Messangers bearing the Word of God, at times advising the various prophets.
A significant encounter is seen in the book of Genesis (32:22-31) when Jacob wrestles with an angel until dawn, overpowering him. The angel in turn touches the socket of Jacob's hip wrenching it. Jacob recognizes the Angel as God himself. He asks God to bless him and in turn God tells him that he will no longer be called Jacob but Israel. Jacob names the place Peniel because he saw God face to face and his life was spared.
Another beautiful meeting takes place at Bethel (Genesis 28:10-17) when Jacob dreams of a ladder reaching up to heaven from the earth and Angels ascending and descending on this ladder.
This dream symbolizes Jesus Christ himself as the ladder bridging the gap between heaven and earth. Jacob later builds an altar at this sacred place dedicated to God having realized the place to be holy ground and the gate of heaven.
When Abraham was visited by three strangers at Mamre (Genesis 18:2) he immediately recognizes the middle stranger as God with his two angels. He rushes about to treat them to a finest meal. God personally visits him in this guise to declare to him that he and Sarah will be blessed by a son even though they were well in their years.
God also promises to return after a year and visit them once again.
In the New Testament, we see how the angels standing in front of the open tomb gladly proclaim the news of the Lord having risen to the women who went to anoint the body of Jesus. The angels inquire as to why they were searching for the living among the dead.
The Angel Gabriel himself descended on this earth to Mary to announce the good news that she was chosen to bear the Son of God.
When Peter was put into prison by King Herod, an Angel appears to him in his cell at night, freeing him from the chains that bound him. Peter follows the angel and they safely pass through the guards and iron gates of the prison walls until they reach the city. Thus the angel helps Peter in escaping so that the next day he again continues to preach on the Risen Christ to the people in Jerusalem.
We all know that on the last day when the trumpet is sounded God will send his angels from the east to west to gather his chosen people.
Our own Guardian Angel never leaves our side protecting us day and night.
In life it is not enough for us to encounter angels at all times. We too have to be angels to others in some way or the other. We too have to lend our smile, a sharing hand, a positive word. We should allow the love to flow from our invisible wings to the people around us. We can both rise and raise others in an angel flight by spreading abundant joy in the world about us.
Today the world is hungry and seeking for love. We can fill in this love with our heart wand. Be someone's glorious sunrise and splendid sunset. Because even the setting sun is not a mark of the end of day or darkness but a promise of another day to soon follow and give us another opportunity to symbolically fly around on this earth being someone's angel.
It is said that God has created gaps between our fingers so that someone special who cares for us can come and fill those gaps by holding our hands.
May we always desire to fill the gaps in the fingers of those whom we love profoundly by being an angel in disguise emulating the love of the Trinity residing in heaven far down the clouds on the expanse of this earth as descending angels until the day we rise as ascending angels up the staircase of heaven.
