Tommy

The other children laughed at and teased Tommy
Their taunting knew no end
He looked different in their sight
And something about him was not quite right

His movements were awkward to say the least
And there was something wrong with his speech
His mental capacity was behind
It was clear there was something wrong with his mind

But his eyes and smile held such love
As if being smiled upon from the angels above
He was always ready to give a hug or two
It was his natural thing to do

Yes, people would gawk and stare
He faced revulsion in the world out there
But his heart so innocent remained unblemished
No one could take the love out of him

He remained unadulterated, pure and true
No matter what others put him through
His heart was truly a heart of gold
And it remained so as he grew old

Downs Syndrome was the case with this child
Some have it severe while others mild
Even though the world scorned Tommy
Knowing him was truly a blessing

Even though Tommy was behind in many things
He had within him a special quality
He had human compassion
And the rare ability to let love be his expression

Tommy touched all who knew him in a special way
And after Tommy, all I can say
Is I wish there could be more Tommys in our human race
For I believe our world would be a better place
