"Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock."-Matthew 7:24-25
A homeowner built a storage building in his back yard. To simplify things he did not secure the walls of the building to the concrete foundation. He just wanted a place to store his lawn equipment and some other tools. Once he had finished the building he was pleased with the outer appearance.
One day, however, hurricane-force winds blew upon the building. Knowing how he had built the foundation, whenever the winds gusted, the man would run to look out his kitchen window to see if the building was still standing. The point is, a builder's workmanship is not determined by its outer appearance but by its ability to endure inclement weather.
Some interesting similarities exist between constructing a house and building our personal life. Both need a good foundation to survive stormy climates. Marriage is a good example. Couples typically do lots of planning for their wedding day. They also tend to plan their honeymoon well. But oftentimes, like a foolish homebuilder, they are ill prepared for the "storms" that come against their marriage. With time, many of these marriages that look so great on the outside fail due to their inability to survive the storms of life.
There is but one way to build a good foundation for our life. It is through obedience to the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ as found in the Bible. They equip us with victorious wisdom for dealing with difficult times. Those who attend church and hear the preacher expound on the Lord's teachings but who fail to apply them, and those who study their Bible but who don't live by the same will not be so equipped.
As long as the weather of life is good it doesn't matter what kind of foundation our life is built upon. It is when the storms come that the difference will be seen.
Dear Lord, thank You for the Bible. Help me to be a doer of its teachings that my life might have a good foundation....Amen.
