In 2Samuel 15 v19-22 when King David is escaping from Jerusalem during the revolt of his son Absalom, Ittai the Gittite and his followers want to join David. David absolves him of any responsibility or need to do so because they were newcomers and “since I go I know not where. ” Nevertheless the response of Ittai is a telling one about the depth of his faithful commitment to David: “As the LORD lives and as my lord the king lives, surely in whatever place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or in life, even there also your servant shall be.” Elisha showed similar commitment to Elijah refusing to be left behind as Elijah went to Bethel, “As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!” (2Kings 2) These kinds of covenental words are reminiscent of Ruth’s words to Naomi, including these words often used in wedding ceremonies , “your people shall be my people, your God my God.” (Ruth 1 v16-17) They also bring to mind the love which knit the soul of Jonathan to this same David, and the words of the Shulamite to her beloved, “Set me as a seal upon your heart. …for love is as strong as death.” (Song of Songs 8 v6-7) Even the words of Peter answering the question of Jesus if they (the original disciples) too would leave, “to whom would we go, you have the words of eternal life.” And finally, at the cost of his own life, Jesus himself committed himself to his disciples including those of us in this present day, promising to be “with you always even till the end of the age” (Matthew 28 v20) and that he would go to prepare a place for them and those believers to come, and if he did that then he would surely return for us all who are part of the bride of Christ, so that they and we could be where He would be forever! (John 14)
