It is not surprising that there would be several Moses/Joshua parallels when we consider that one trained and mentored the other. Both had divine encounters where sandals needed to removed because of the holy ground upon which each stood. Both performed wonders at God’s command and were thereby made great in the eyes of the children of Israel. Moses miraculously led the children of Israel through the parted waters of the Red Sea to escape bondage in Egypt and Joshua led Israel through the flooding waters of the Jordan to enter the Promised Land. Both of these miracles occurred at Passover. Each of those succeeding generations had their own immediate experience of the supernatural power of Yahweh God on their behalf. It is still necessary today that each generation of believers experience God’s mighty power afresh for themselves rather than attempt to ride the coattails of a previous generations, though each succeeding generation can and should be instructed and inspired by the wisdom and experience of their elders in previous generations. (But even among the patriarchs Issac had to “re dig” for himself the well that his father Abraham had dug). It’s questionable if there’s any miracle more wondrous than Joshua commanding the sun to stand still and the moon to stop in overcoming the Amorites! (Joshua Chapter 10)  Neither is it coincidental that the land of his inheritance where he was also buried should be called Timnath Serah or “portion of the sun!” It’s as if God gave him his own portion of the sun itself to commemorate that might miracle, as God also blessed Moses for his faithfulness by allowing him to stand in the Promised Land on the Mount of Transfiguration with Elijah and Jesus even though he had been forbidden to enter it in his own lifetime.
