“Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews (Matthew 27:27-29 NKJ)!”
Normally, when I contemplated the significance of this passage I focused on Jesus’ painful crown of thorns. Yet, the reed that He held in His right hand is important too. Though soldiers placed it in His hand with disdain and mockery, the scepter it represented is fitting the King of Kings.
As King, He will reign over all nations. Yes, all will bow before him.
“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9-11 NKJ).”
