Rick was so angry at Mari for giving his daughter a Bible and taking her to church behind his back that he could hardly speak. He tried over and over to get Ashlyn to give him her new Bible so he could throw it away, but she wouldn't do it, and all she would do was yell at him and tell him to leave her alone. He knew she was angry with him for keeping her away from her best friend, but he didn't see what other choice he had. It was either that or let Mari fill her daughter's head with the same fantasies about there being a God that he couldn't prove existed, he told himself.

Ashlyn couldn't sleep that night. She was really mad at her dad. He knew she and Emmy were so close they were like sisters. In fact, they wanted to be sisters. If he was mad at Emmy's mommy, fine, but he knew what her friendship with Emmy meant to her. Ashlyn decided that she didn't like living with her daddy anymore, because he was too mean. She'd have much more fun living with Emmy and her mommy, since they helped her believe in Jesus, something she was glad she had chosen to do. Her dad was busy working on more inventions to sell at the science fair, but as soon as he went to bed and was sound asleep, she would sneak out of the house and go to her friend's house. She quietly packed her bag, and as soon as she heard loud snoring from her father's room, she quietly climbed out of the window and headed to Emmy's house.

Meanwhile, at Emmy's house, Emmy woke up from a bad dream. She dreamed of asking Ashlyn if she would like to play with her, and Ashlyn said she couldn't play with her anymore, because her dad said they couldn't be best friends anymore. Emmy was so upset by the dream that she went into her mother's room and and asked if she could sleep with her. Mari agreed, and when Emmy climbed into Mari's bed, Mari wrapped her arms around her daughter and held her close, then softly sang a lullaby. Emmy went back to sleep, and Mari, who was clearly exhausted, fell asleep a second after Emmy went back to sleep, snoring softly in her sleep. A moment later, Ashlyn got to her friend's house, and she found the tree near the patio that led up to Emmy's room. She began to climb it, but no sooner had her feet touched the roof that she slipped off of it and landed onto the porch with a loud CRASH!

The crash woke Mari and Emmy. Mari held Emmy close instinctively and said, "Emmy, sweetie, I'm going to go and check outside. Somebody's out there. I need to see who it is. You wait right here, and lock the door and don't come out till I say it's safe." She looked at her daughter sternly. "Do you understand?" Emmy nodded.

Mari threw on a bathrobe over her nightgown and went downstairs to the fireplace, where she picked up a fireplace poker. She crept outside, but she didn't see any burglar there. To her horror she saw her daughter's best friend lying on the porch unconscious, blood coming from her head! "Ashlyn!" she cried. She ran back into the house and dialed 911.

Emmy had heard her mother scream and ran downstairs. "Mama, what is it?" she asked, frightened. "What's wrong with Ashlyn?"

Mari scooped Emmy up and hugged her. "She's been hurt," she said frantically. She held her daughter on her hip as she explained to the 911 operator what had happened. Emmy cried as she listened to her mother and prayed that Ashlyn would be all right.
