It shouldn’t be happening but it is. We are supposed to be different from the world – people of faith who trust in God. Yet so often that faith is missing and we become humanistic in our thinking.

Over the local church microphone this morning came an announcement that the finances coming into denominational headquarters had thinned in recent years. So the intention is that everyone should pay a fee of $25 per year for the privilege of being in that church.

Where does God figure in all of this? Not prominently. We can see from the Bible that any church or individual with a heart for God, (putting into practice what God says) has no need to worry about finance. The Apostle Paul says in Philippians 4:19: “And My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” The Lord told the disciples way back then (Mark 6:8) their needs would be met. So it is today. If the needs are not met and money is not coming in, then we must examine ourselves as to whether we are in fact doing what God said to do.

The Lord can and will alter any financial situation at the stroke of a pen on a chequebook, or some other means. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, the scripture says (Psalm 50:10). Furthermore, “I [Jesus] will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18). Notice it says Jesus will build it, not us. We need to be people of faith. The world has its money-raising jumble sales, garage sales and raffle tickets. We are not of the world and we do not need those humanistic methods.

One of the greatest ministries of faith was that of George Mueller, a German man who many years ago set up an orphanage in Bristol, England. It was run totally on faith. George never asked for money but God always supplied it. Read about it in George Mueller: Man of Faith by Bonnie Harvey (Heroes of the Faith series, Barbour). It is wonderful reading, truly a lesson for churches today.

Sometimes the orphanage kitchen cupboards were empty. What to do? George led the children in prayer to thank God for the non-existent food. Now that’s faith! Within minutes there would be a knock at the door, and people stood there carrying plates piled high. If it didn’t happen that way it was by other means – but God did it!

Surely the Lord wants us to trust Him for everything. He is majestic, awesome, omnipotent. The air you breathe now as you read this is supplied by God. The water in your kitchen tap is from Him also. Let’s recognize what a mighty God we serve. Let’s not merely talk about faith, but practise it! Boot out that humanistic thinking - it is nothing but doubt and unbelief.
