Exodus 32 shows us clearly why we needed a new covenant with an eternally perfect High Priest, Jesus Christ.   Aaron failed miserably to restrain the people of Israel partying in the absence of his brother Moses.  Not only did he fail to restrain them, he accommodated them by making a golden calf for them to worship in their wild orgy.  When later confronted, Aaron answered that he had merely put the gold in the fire and the calf "came out."  But earlier in the chapter we're informed that Aaron intentionally "fashioned" and "made" the calf.  Aaron was loathe to admit and assume responsibility for his actions.  Were it not for the intercession of Moses, who was willing for his own name to be blotted out of God's book in seeking his people's forgiveness, Aaron would have been obliterated.  Even as it was there was a high price to pay, three thousand men had to be slain in the camp by the Levites, the only ones to stand on God's side.  Moses behaved more like a high priest than the one who filled that position.  This is not to pick on Aaron, however.  Don't we, making excuses for ourselves, repeat these same kinds of mistakes today, though in, perhaps, more subtle ways?  In like "fashion" we too would be obliterated or blotted out were it not for the intervention and intercession of our great high priest Jesus Christ the Righteous who gave His life a ransom for all who would believe.
