Christianity and Science

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

Not all scientists are atheists, as the press would want you to believe, but the atheists who get media attention try very hard to make warfare with Christianity, claiming that the two are mutually exclusive. On the other extreme, those Christians who espouse a 6-day creation foster the warfare, and weaken our cause with assertions about the age of the earth that have been shown to be false by sound scientific study.

What most people don't realize is that the early stages of scientific inquiry in the 16th and 17th centuries were undertaken by Christian scientists and done with the backing of the Christian Church. They were faithful to St. Augustine's stand in the 4th century and his belief in the "unity of truth". There is one truth; there cannot be one truth for science and one truth for Christianity. God created the universe, and there must be coherent truth in nature and Christianity.

If we adopt St. Augustine's belief and look objectively at what scientists have discovered about the creation of the universe, we will be pleased. As a result of exceptional experimental progress and the development of theory, it is now universally accepted among scientists that the universe was created in what is known as the Big Bang. In this event which occurred 16 billion years ago, all matter and energy that exists within the universe was created in one instantaneous explosion of unimaginable magnitude.

All scientific information available to human beings about creation stops at the Big Bang. Creation occurred "ex nihilo", out of nothing. There is absolutely no way to explain the Big Bang without the existence of a Supernatural Being who caused it. Matter and energy cannot will themselves into existence.

The term "Big Bang" was originally a derisive term coined by an atheist in the 1920's in an attempt to discredit this idea which at that time was a theory. When the question about the origins of the universe was in doubt, atheists well knew that the Big Bang theory was a death blow to their atheistic beliefs if shown to be true. Decades of sophisticated science has verified the Big Bang theory.

The Big Bang is the closest thing to a "proof" that there is a Supernatural Being. It does not establish that the Supernatural Being is the God of the Bible. That truth came later, through initially His disclosure to Israel, and finally the ultimate revelation of Himself in Jesus Christ.

We don't hear atheists talk about the truth of the Big Bang anymore, because they know it totally undermines their prejudices against the existence of God. Christians need to remember it. If we encounter opportunities to discuss serious matters with atheists, it is a good place to start.
