For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."(2 Timothy 1:7)
When a just small lad, I became fearful of a shadow, my shadow. Why this happened, I have long since forgotten. In fact, I was so taken back by shadows, I stopped going out in the sun shine. Now, I don't remember when I come to grow out of this anomaly, I just did (Philippians 4:6-7). Are you fearful. If so, what is your fear ?
Fear is not of God's vocabulary. In fact that the phrase "fear " as sprinkled throughout scripture, shows us the importance of the issue. In fact "fear' is probably the enemy's most popular weapon.
I realize in today's world a lot is going on around us. So much craziness. Just read your local news paper, tune in the national TV news, surf the internet, or simply talk with your neighbor across the back yard fence.
Fears such as government conflicts, wars, persecution, violence, crime, natural disasters, terrorism, economic uncertainty, unemployment, divisions, disease, death, and the list goes on and on, causing us to be fearful of our children’s future, and our families as well.1 Peter 5:6-7).
To add to the mix of fear, we also find the enemy using fear to hinder us from excursing the gifts of God (Ephesians 6:12). Gifts God has given to touch His people and a needy world. As the scripture dictates, our God wants you to take His power, His love, and His calm thinking to overcome fear (Romans 8:38-39).
A side bar of this scripture (2 Timothy 1:7) means that fear, especially chronic or frequent fear of various things, is being caused and fed by Satan, and is to be rejected by Christians. As God promises to give us love, spiritual power (over things like fear), and an orderly, stable mind with which to meet the world, the flesh and the Devil. This is a promise to believers, and any time you feel fear you can stop and ask God to fulfill that promise to you, and He will strengthen and calm you(Luke 12:22-26) .
You see, we might still feel afraid, but we can believe that God is with us. We may not be in control, but we can trust the One who is. We may not know the future, but we can know the God who does (Isaiah 41:10).
So, don't be afraid of your shadow. For the one who spoke the world into place (Psalm 33:9), who rules nature (Mark 4:39-40), and who died for your freedom (Romans 5:7), will surely protect you by controlling the sun's shadows, your shadows (Psalm 91:1-16).
