 Psalm 46 contains the well-known verse “be still and know that I am God….”  I was reminded recently that the Hebrew word translated “know”  can mean intimacy between a man and a woman.  Oftentimes in the physical intimacy between a man and a woman new life is conceived within the woman.  It is true, too,  in our times of quiet communion with God that new life, new enterprises, new giftings or new spiritual qualities are conceived during specific windows of opportunity.  As with human conception biologically we don’t know what that life will look like or exactly when it will come.  It too must be properly and carefully nurtured or it could be tragically lost.  But a pregnancy, be it natural or spiritual, can be an exciting and mysterious time even amidst its discomforts or awkwardness.  We need to pray to be able to recognize the life that we have birthed in the Spirit as the realities and practicalities of that life stare us in the face.  Miscarriages, stillbirths and abortions in the spiritual realm may be more common than we think, which would not be surprising because, when something is an issue in the natural world, there is oftentimes a spiritual parallel.

As I was commenting on this with my wife she “happened to be” reading a novel at a point in the story where a daughter was interacting with a woman she knew to be her mother,  but without her mother knowing that she was her daughter!  ( She had been put up for adoption as a baby.)
