MAKING IT BELIEVEABLE?

"He (God) divided the sea and led them through; He made the water stand firm like a wall."  Psalm 78:13 NIV

Sitting through many Bible Study Classes, it has been my privilege to hear varied personal interpretations of  Biblical history.  

Sometimes the interpretation is privately held, while at others an individual is reporting what some Professor taught in a University classroom.

In most Group discussions there seems to be the Yayers and the Nayers; it does make for lively discussions!

I remember one Group in particular in which the Facilitator was able to accept "altered" interpretations of Scripture, but was resistant to the standard interpretations of the texts.

When we were in the Book of The Exodus, reading about the Red Sea experience of the Hebrews, she was delighted to inform us that this was not really a "miracle"  as such - because that in truth this was the Reid Sea, and the water was about 2 inches deep.

One of the Groups participants then told us of an account they had heard about in a class at the University in which a Professor had relayed that same interpretation about the Red Sea experience, after which, a young man began to shout all over the back of the classroom, hooping an hollering over and over again saying, "Praise God!"  Praise God!  What a miracle! What a miracle, Pharaoh and his entire army were drowned in 2 inches of water!"

When we alter what the Bible reports we find that the alteration requires as much, or more faith to believe than does it require to believe the report as it is written.

In reading Psalm 78: 13 this morning this classroom experience came to mind and I had to chuckle as I saw a WALL of WATER, made from 2 inches of water.

Let us ask ourselves, "Why is there a need to alter Scripture?"

Do we think we are making it more believable?
