Matthew 25 verse 35 says, .”I was hungry…..I was thirsty….I was a stranger and you took me in.”(welcomed me). The expression “took me in ” translates the Greek word which is the root word for synagogue. The entirety of the meaning of the word translated “took me in ” encompasses body, soul and spirit, an embracing of the total person which addresses physical lodging, entertainment, and spiritual or moral need as well. What Jesus is implying is a complete acceptance of a person who is a stranger or foreigner, translated from the Greek “xenos” from which we get the word xenophobia meaning fear of foreigners. Thankfully in this case to which Jesus refers, that fear has been well overcome!
