Healing
O Lord my God, I cried out to You, and You healed me. (Psalm 30:2)
When a 17-year-old pulled out in front of DeLonda’s car their vehicles collided. DeLonda’s airbag deployed severely injuring her left arm. The pain was more agonizing than anything she could have ever imagined. DeLonda’s left hand swelled twice its size and she had two breaks to her elbow. Since her left arm was in such horrific condition, DeLonda was forced to wear a sling on her arm and a brace for her hand.
Several months later, DeLonda received an unexpected diagnosis, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (“RSD”), due to trauma to her body. In most cases, the disease spreads causing constant burning, searing pain with no cure. RSD is ranked on the McGill Pain Index as more agonizing than cancer or childbirth. Many can overdose trying to get relief from the excruciating pain. Sadly, some commit suicide.
In the early days of dealing with intolerable pain and use of only one arm, DeLonda’s tears turned into depression. She wondered where her life was headed and discouragement overcame her. Finally, despair crept in as she remembered her and her husband’s future plans. Church attendance was only a fond memory. The things she loved to do such as horseback riding and cross-stitching were too difficult. DeLonda longed for her husband’s loving embrace, but it was an impossibility. The slightest touch to her arm sent waves of pain throughout her entire body. Household chores fell by the wayside and her husband had to cook most of the meals. DeLonda had several surgeries to help relieve the pain, but nothing gave her relief.
As time went by and with the prayers of many people, the Lord answered in various ways. DeLonda prayed about returning to church and it was then that the Lord showed her what she could do. It first began with attending Sunday evening services every other week. She made up her mind to go no matter how bad she felt. That led into attending every Sunday evening. After a period of time, she began to attend on Sunday mornings. Finally, she worked her way into returning three times a week despite how she felt.
Later, God provided DeLonda a place to horseback ride at a therapeutic program for disabled riders. Her wonderful ability to cross-stitch was also restored. Little by little, DeLonda’s joy returned and she found ways to do the things she enjoyed. The Lord even revealed ways she could work with one hand. Somehow, she would envision how to do a certain task and a way to function. All along the journey, DeLonda was constantly amazed at the goodness of God and gave Him praise for everything He did to help her. One of DeLonda’s favorite verses became Philippians 4:13:
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
For a number of years, DeLonda cried out to the Lord believing for her healing. Somehow last year, she felt strongly that He was going to do that, but she didn’t know when or how. Earlier this year, DeLonda felt God impressing upon her heart these words from Jeremiah 29:11: "I know the plans I have for you - to prosper you."
One day DeLonda and her husband were at a department store. Her husband went one way to get a few things and she went another. As she stood in an aisle making her selections, DeLonda became lost in thought on what to get. Suddenly, two young men approached her, but for some reason she felt at peace and unafraid. One wore a cross necklace and the other wore glasses, whose face seemed to shine.
As usual, the familiar sling and brace she had worn for the last 9½ years were in place. The young man with the cross necklace asked DeLonda if they could pray for her arm and she agreed. He placed his hand on her right arm and began to pray out loud. DeLonda felt as if she couldn’t move, but there was a welcome warmth that flowed over her entire body. When the two young men finished praying they spoke with DeLonda only briefly and assured her that God was going to bless her. With that, they went their way and were never seen again. DeLonda noticed that the two young men did not have a cart or anything to purchase.
Later that night, positive thoughts ran through DeLonda’s mind. She believed she was better and expressed it to her husband. The next day, after another night of sleeping with the sling and brace in place, DeLonda removed them to prepare for church. When she did, her left arm dropped down and straightened at her side. It had not straightened out and had been in a fixed position for 9½ years due to the RSD. Needless to say, DeLonda was astonished.
Since then, DeLonda has not worn the sling or brace. Her hand that was previously curved under is now perfectly straight. The pain and sensitivity from the RSD is completely gone. To DeLonda, the healing seems as a dream, but perhaps this is one dream that actually came true for someone in desperate need. More than anything, is an answer to prayer.
The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. (James 5:16)
Many believe miracles ceased with the death of the last apostle, but I can assure you that is completely false. DeLonda’s testimony is verification that the Lord Jesus Christ is still working miracles today.
In my lifetime, I have witnessed amazing miracles due to the wondrous power of Jesus Christ. This is another testimonial of the compassion of our Savior to heal the sick and to help one of His children.
Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” When Jesus was here on earth, He went everywhere doing good and served the people. (Acts 10:38) He is doing the same today. There’s an old song that says, “What He’s done for others, He’ll do for you.” (It Is No Secret, by Stuart Hamblen.)
We have the assurance that Jesus is alive and well because He was resurrected from the dead three days after He was crucified. I believe there are miracles waiting to happen if God‘s people will only believe and cry out to Him.
“We are not believing, therefore, we are not receiving.”
As I was writing this message, the above statement came to me as clear as anything I’ve written. It did not come from me, but from the Lord. How gracious He is to let us know that we need to believe so we can receive.
What do you need from the Healer? Jesus is still in the miracle business. Reach out to Him, for He is reaching out to you. Call out His name in prayer for the Lord Jesus Christ is on your side and wants to bless you. Miracles still happen.
Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for Thou art my praise. (Jeremiah 17:14)
