For most of my life, I’ve wondered what it would have been like to walk with Jesus while He was on this earth. I’ve thought about what it must have been like for the disciples to follow Jesus every day, see the miracles He performed, and listen as He taught them about who God is. But several years ago, I had an experience that I’ll never forget, that made everything so real to me. I wanted to share this as a way to show that God can give us these little glimpses of His character in places that we wouldn’t think about being spiritually profound.
Towards the end of my time in Asia, a friend invited me to her family’s home out in the country. In order to fully understand the impact that it had on me, I need to give you a picture of what their home was like. When we arrived, we walked past the wall that surrounded their home. Between this wall and their home was their “toilet”, which I will skip going into too much detail about. There was a small basin of water for washing up. And the bed consisted of a concrete slab with one blanket on top. I only include these details to show what the home was like. Without this description, the moment I had while there wouldn’t have meant as much.
The night we got there, we walked over to her grandma’s house. She joined us on a walk around the area, and this is when I got to have an encounter with God that I couldn’t have had any other way. While we were walking, almost as clear as if He were standing right there with us, I knew in that moment, exactly what it must have been like to walk with Jesus. This is family were the exact people that He would’ve searched for while He was on Earth. And I’m not sure I’ve ever felt His heart for people as much as I did in that moment.
If you are truly desiring to see God’s heart, all you have to do is look for the people around you. It doesn’t matter if they’re rich or poor, but if they are people that are in need of Him or are looking for Him, those are the people that He searches out. And there is no better experience than getting a glimpse of God’s heart for people, even if you have to travel to the other side of the world to see it.
