‘You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’ (Rom 5:6-8, NIV).
Death is a result of Adam’s sins and of the sins we all commit. The law was given to make the people realize their sinfulness and to show them the seriousness of their offences, in turn driving them closer to God for mercy and pardon. The law though points towards our sins, it offers no remedy. It lays the responsibility for it on our shoulders. Some might think that how can we be declared guilty of what Adam did thousands of years ago? We all are made up of the same stuff and are prone to rebel. We are judged for the sins we do. Because we are sinners it isn’t fairness that we need- its mercy. Just as Adam was a representative of created humanity so is Christ the representative of new spiritual humanity. ‘The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord’ (Rom 5:20-21).
The love that Christ died is the same love that sends the Holy Spirit to live in us and guide us every day. The power that raised Christ from the dead is the same power that saved us and is available to us in our daily lives. Be assured that having begun a life with Christ, you have a reserve of power and love to call on each day, for help to meet every challenge and trial.
Prayer: Lord, I pray to you for the blessing of the Holy Spirit so that I may realize your grace. Amen.
