SIN IS NOT A MISTAKE
PRE-VIEW
A 15 year old girl was found dead yesterday. They have come to discover that when she was 5 years, she was kidnapped by a man and kept in the man’s basement for 10 years, where she was starved, beaten and raped. She escaped but her body was so warm and weak that before she could get out of the winter to seek refuge in someone’s house, she died in the snow all alone. If you can tell me this story doesn’t make you angry at the kidnapper, I wouldn’t have much respect for you at all. Are you saying that this story doesn’t make you mad, fill you with indignation or doesn’t cause you to speak and say that something must be done? If you have the right to be angry at the kidnapper, why do you deny God this right? Do you know how much God hates sin? If Adam sinned once and the entire universe was thrown into chaos judgment, how many times have you sinned?
SUBSTANCE
Romans 3:23 “...for all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God”, this quotation from the Holy Bible has lost its meaning because it is very popular. When something becomes common, when it is heard over and over again, it loses its meaning. Example, the first time I saw the sea, I was very amazed and terrified. But to those who stayed along the coast, they walked on the shores of the sea as if they have not seen what I was seeing. If we truly understand the above scripture in Romans, we will be terrified. Sin isn’t an error, a mistake or doing what one doesn’t wish to do which is against God’s commands as some people say. Sin is an intentional rebellion, a crime, putting ones will against the person of God and His laws. Sin is more than just an act or a decision. People sin not because they are sinners; rather people are sinners because they sin.
Men are wicked and full of sin. Genesis 6:5 “The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time” Men here refer to all men, women and children. A song writer said this, “If the world were governed by a child, there will always be peace”. This song writer probably has never had a child. Take a 3 year old child into a room and give him several toys to play with. If the child develops a dislike for a particular toy which he shows by throwing that particular toy away, put it back in his hands and he will again throw it away over and over again. To make the child like that particular toy, bring in another child of his age and give this rejected toy to him. What happens? Suddenly the first child who rejected that toy now cries wanting back this same toy. Where from this selfishness? Buy a drink with your own money for this child and ask him to give you some and he will shake the head to tell you he will not. Hit his hand with yours when he misbehaves and he will retaliate by hitting you back. Where from all these bad habits? Have you now seen how sinful men are even from birth? Note that you do not need to teach the child to behave that way; he knows it from birth by nature. Sin is our nature and it is only through the Blood of Jesus Christ that we were saved from sin. What then becomes of a sinner, a person who keeps on living in sin after hearing the Good News of Jesus Christ?
If I start telling you about the nature of God’s Holiness and Righteousness, you will stand up and tell me that you can’t love a God like that, because the God I am talking about cannot be your God. Yes He isn’t your God because the god you worship is a god you have made with your own imagination according to the lust of your own heart and flesh. A god of prosperity, a god of easy life, a god of miracle, a god who takes away all your sufferings, but sorry this is not the God of the Holy Bible. Men are evil and so hate God, why? Because God is good and has given us good laws and commands, but because men are evil and so hate those laws. Presently, some people who even pose as Christians do not want to hear the word ‘Law’. The moment you start talking to them about God’s law, they become angry and they are like ‘you can’t impose that law on us, we are free’. So are you saying God’s laws are oppressive to your actions? Tell me which one. Is it the one which says you shall not commit adultery or fornication? Or is it the one which says you shall not steal or kill? Well, if these Holy Laws are oppressive to you, then you are an adulterer, a thief or a murderer and you like these bad things which God hates because you are evil and these laws are good. God will judge you even if you do not understand that all what you do are sin. You don’t understand not because you lack the capacity to understand but rather, you have chosen not to understand by living in ignorance because there is no fear of God in your eyes.
Isaiah 64:6 “All of us have become like one unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags…” This uncleanness may be linked to the healing of the leper in Luke 5:12-14, where Jesus said He was willing to make the leper clean and so healed the leper by saying “Be clean”. If a leper stands outside you room, you will smell him before he enters; he is a rotten flesh, blood, body fluid and infected. If you decide to help him by wrapping around him a very expensive white cloth you just bought from the market, he looks presentable just for a moment. The corruption of his body begins to bleed through the cloth making the cloth as corrupt as the body itself. This is why your good works cannot save you. No matter the number of times you do what is good, without Christ in you, the sin in you makes you more and more sinful. What you need to do is to get the sin out of you which is made possible by the divine intervention of Christ in your life, making you a new creature.
I know you are very familiar with the phrase “God loves the sinner and hates the sin”. I must say that there is some truth in the statement. But do you know what the problem is? It is not biblical; it is very misleading and dangerous as well. This is because you are actually contradicting a bible scripture when you say that because, there are places in the bible where God says He hates the sinner. There can be nothing like sin without a sinner. Sin is made sin because of the sinner. So if God is going to hate the sin because it exists, He must hate the mechanism that makes visible that sin, and this mechanism is the sinner. Psalm 5:5 “The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong” You may ask ‘so what about John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life”?’ YES I agree with that, it is found in the bible, so is Psalm 5:5. You don’t have to look at only one side of the coin, look at both sides. If you don’t understand the hatred of God, you cannot understand His love.
Some say that God cannot hate because God is love. That is not true. God is love and so He must hate. Example, if you are love Africans, you must hate those who engage in slavery. If you love children, you must hate those who partake in abortion. Well if this is not your God, then you are not serving the God of the bible. Psalm 7:11 “God is a righteous judge, a God who expresses His wrath every day”
POST-VIEW
What about His mercies? One may ask. Well, let me tell you the fundamentals of God’s mercy. God’s mercies are manifested in the sense that, with one hand He holds back His judgment and wrath upon all men to condemn the sinner and the wicked. With the other hand, He calls all men to repentance, crying to men “Come before it is too late”. For when His judgment comes, there will be no mercy, no grace. This grace is shown to us by His love of sending His son to die for all men, that through Him men will be saved. Listen to the bible…on the only condition that you believe in Him; make Him your personal Savior, upon Him you look up to all your life, a desire to grow in holiness and to be like Him. Developing hatred for the things He hates and developing love for the things He loves… AMEN!
