INTRODUCTION
The church is in a very serious crisis. There are more lost souls than Christians, the church appears to be weak in evangelism, and doing poor in Christian spiritual growth. Instead of reaping the harvest, churches are closing down. Were are the Trustworthy Laborers?
In this article, I discuss the crisis the church is going through, and then propose possible solutions. I highlight the approximate number of lost souls as compare to Christians, the closing down of churches, and discuss the reasons why churches are closing down, and also propose possible solutions.
I propose the solution in a way that it is accompanied by a survey questionnaire to test and prove my argument or assertion. All you need to do, is to use the questionnaire to find out whether these problems occured or these measures were taken to prevent the decline of Christianity and possible closure of churches. You can also use the questionaire in your church to find out whether Christianity is declinng or the measures discussed in this article, have been taken to prevent the decline of Christianity and the possible closure of your church.
If the answers from the survey don`t point out to what I`m saying, don`t believe me. In fact, whenever you see my name Mike M. Sonpon associated to any article, consider that article irrelevant. I made this statement to indicate that I`m very serious, optimistic, and confident about my argument and assertion.
I. The Approximate number of Lost Souls As Compare To Christians.
Lost souls are those who have not whole heartediy accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and personal Savior. In other words, lost souls are non Christians. The urgency to win lost souls at all cost must be emphasized and pursued. Winning lost souls to Jesus Christ must be a matter of must for the church. It is urgent, and must be swiftly implimented, because it is a command. After his resurrection, He- Jesus commanded the church to fulfill the Great Commission.
Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV)
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Matthew 28:18-20, serves as a constant reminder that the church has an obligation to win lost souls at all cost. The question of how is the church responding to its obligation, is a debate.
But, in any case, the demography of religions seems to shed more light on the urgency of winning lost souls at all cost. According to the Pew Research Center of Religion and Public life, “the demographic study – based on analysis of more than 2,500 censuses, surveys and population registers – finds 2.2 billion Christians (32% of the world’s population), 1.6 billion Muslims (23%), 1 billion Hindus (15%), nearly 500 million Buddhists (7%) and 14 million Jews (0.2%) around the world as of 2010. In addition, more than 400 million people (6%) practice various folk or traditional religions, including African traditional religions, Chinese folk religions, Native American religions and Australian aboriginal religions. An estimated 58 million people – slightly less than 1% of the global population – belong to other religions, including the Baha’i faith, Jainism, Sikhism, Shintoism, Taoism, Tenrikyo, Wicca and Zoroastrianism, to mention just a few. At the same time, the new study by the Pew Forum also finds that roughly one-in-six people around the globe (1.1 billion, or 16%) have no religious affiliation. This makes the unaffiliated the third-largest religious group worldwide, behind Christians and Muslims, and about equal in size to the world’s Catholic population. Surveys indicate that many of the unaffiliated hold some religious or spiritual beliefs (such as belief in God or a universal spirit) even though they do not identify with a particular faith”.
On the other hand, “the geographic distribution of religious groups varies considerably. Several religious groups are heavily concentrated in the Asia-Pacific region, including the vast majority of Hindus (99%), Buddhists (99%), adherents of folk or traditional religions (90%) and members of other world religions (89%).Three-quarters of the religiously unaffiliated (76%) also live in the massive and populous Asia- Pacific region. Indeed, the number of religiously unaffiliated people in China alone (about 700 million) is more than twice the total population of the United States. The Asia-Pacific region also is home to most of the world’s Muslims (62%). About 20% of Muslims live in the Middle East and North Africa, and nearly 16% reside in sub-Saharan Africa.Of the major religious groups covered in this study, Christians are the most evenly dispersed. Roughly equal numbers of Christians live in Europe (26%), Latin America and the Caribbean (24%) and sub-Saharan Africa (24%)”.
According to this report, there are more lost souls than Christians. In other words, the more than seven billions people on the planet, Christianity can only give account for approximately three billions people that are worshiping the Judeo-Christian God. This include Jews, Roman Catholics, and Protestant Christians. This account for about 35% of the world`s population, which means, approximately four billions, about 65% of the world`s population are considered as lost souls, non christians. Instead of trying to win lost souls, the church is in a very serious crisis. Churches are closing down!!!
II. Churches Are Closing Down!
The church is in a very serious crisis. According to the Christian Crier, an Evangelical website, “Of the 250,000 Protestant churches in America, 200,000 are either stagnant (with no growth) or declining. That is 80% of the churches in America and maybe the one you attend, if you attend at all. 4,000 churches close their doors every single year. There is less than half of the number of churches today than there were only 100 years ago. 3,500 people leave the church every single day. Since 1950, there are 1/3rd fewer churches in the U.S”.
The Christian Crier is not the only website reporting the decline of Christianity in the U.S. There are a number of websites also reporting this story. djchuang.com seems to be more explicit. It says, American church statistics have reported [via Goodmanson]: that “in America, 3500 – 4000 churches close their doors each year. Half of all churches last year did not add one new member through conversion growth. Churches lose an estimated 2,765,000 people each year to nominalism and secularism. The 3,500-4,000 U.S. churches annual closure count is also cited by Ed Stetzer in “Planting New Churches in a Postmodern Age. 1,400 pastors in America leave the ministry monthly. Only 15% of churches in the United States are growing and just 2.2% of those are growing by conversion growth. 10,000 churches in America disappeared in a five-year period. Fifteen hundred pastors leave the ministry each month due to moral failure, spiritual burnout, or contention in their churches.” [Source: “Death by Ministry” (slides + audio) by Darrin Patrick @ The journey. One blog post attributed these findings to Shiloh Place Ministries (shilohplace.org), which drew its information from Focus on the Family, Ministries Today, Charisma Magazine, TNT Ministries, and other respected groups are reporting the same story. They also report that 1,500 pastors leave the ministry permanently each month in America. 7,000 churches close each year in America”.
The reports from the various organizations about the exact number of churches that closed down a year might not be the same, but in any case, it is true that thousands of churches closed their doors every year and hundreds of ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ, leave the ministry every year. The evidence of this can be seen in every state as you travel across the United States, there are abandoned churches, some of them have been vacant for several years and the members and pastors are no longer using these beautiful church buildings.
In facts, according to Reuters, “Banks are foreclosing on America’s churches in record numbers as lenders increasingly lose patience with religious facilities that have defaulted on their mortgages, according to new data. The surge in church foreclosures represents a new wave of distressed property seizures triggered by the 2008 financial crash, analysts say, with many banks no longer willing to grant struggling religious organizations forbearance. Since 2010, 270 churches have been sold after defaulting on their loans, with 90 percent of those sales coming after a lender-triggered foreclosure, according to the real estate information company CoStar Group. In 2011, 138 churches were sold by banks, an annual record, with no sign that these religious foreclosures are abating, according to CoStar. That compares to just 24 sales in 2008 and only a handful in the decade before. The church foreclosures have hit all denominations across America, black and white, but with small to medium size houses of worship the worst. Most of these institutions have ended up being purchased by other churches. The highest percentage have occurred in some of the states hardest hit by the home foreclosure crisis: California, Georgia, Florida and Michigan”.
The decline of the church is not only happening in the U.S, according to the Wall Street Journal, the headline of a story posted on their website on January 2, 2015, “Hundreds of Churches Have Closed or Are Threatened by Plunging Membership, Posing Question: What to Do With Unused Buildings? The Wall Street Journal further asserts that the closing of Europe’s churches reflects the rapid weakening of the faith in Europe, a phenomenon that is painful to both worshipers and others who see religion as a unifying factor in a disparate society”.
This is not all the story from Europe, according to the The U.K. Times Online reported on February 10, 2007: “Thousands of churches face closure, demolition or conversion in the next decade, leading to the demise of some branches of Christianity in Europe, according to experts. In some parts of the country, former churches are being turned into centres of worship for other faiths”.
According to Gatestone Institute, an International Policy Council, Muslims in Europe are increasingly converting empty Christian churches into mosques. “The proliferation of mosques housed in former churches reflects the rise of Islam as the fastest growing religion in post-Christian Europe. There are now more practising Muslims than practicing Christians in many parts of Europe, not only in large urban centers, but also in smaller towns and cities across the continent. As Islam replaces Christianity as the dominant religion in Europe, more and more churches are set to become mosques, which increasingly serve not only as religious institutions but also function as the foundational political building blocks for the establishment of separate, parallel Muslim communities in Europe that are based on Islamic Sharia law”.
But why are churches closing down and empty churches are being converted to be used by other religions? In the next section, I discuss three major reasons why churches are closing down in Europe and North America.
III. Reasons Why Churches Are Closing Down.
It is a great set back to the world and to Christianity for churches to close down. This is a sign that the influence of Christianity is declining, and therefore the church must wake up and act swiftly to regain its past glory and conquor the world. It is urgent, let`s rescue the church.
But why is Christianity experiencing set backs, non achievement, deprogression and failures?
The Tablet picks up the story. According to the Tablet, a British Catholic weekly journal posted on February 19, 2015, and updated on may 28, 2015, the church is in dire need of vocations from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The Tablet asserts that “When one looks at vocations in Europe and northern America nowadays, vis-à-vis vocations in Africa, Asia and Latin America, one can not but see a trend of reversed mission. However, one wonders on the other hand the motive for the daily closure of churches and parishes in Europe and northern America. The reason is often said to be the lack of personnel to man those places. But if truth be told; there is personnel in Africa, Asia and Latin America to man those areas. Why are they not being called upon to avail themselves? In the past Africa, Asia and Latin America received personnel from Europe and North America and in good numbers. Now the latter is in dire need. Why this reluctance to seek assistance from the former? I would then think the bottom line is that there is a refusal of the Church in Europe and North America to be open to the reversed nature of vocations in the Church”.
This report, (the Tablet), seems to point out something very important. It is difficult to argue that it is because of the lack of qualified priests, or pastors, or personnels to operate these churches brought about their closure. If this argument is raised for Africa, Asia, and Latin America, it will make sense and will be reasonable enough to believe. This doesn`t mean that the argument is not possible to be relevant for Europe and North America. The point here is that there are more opportunities in Europe and North America than in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Therefore in my opinion, as we will see, there are three major reasons for the closure of churches in Europe and North America.
A). Worldliness...
When a church looses its identity or purpose of being, in a particular place, the existence of the church becomes irrelevant, it is therefore most often closed down. This happens when the world, and that is, worldly activities, entered the church, overtake the pastors, priests, lay-leaders, and members. In other words, instead of the church winning the world (non Christians) over to Jesus Christ, the world (non Christians) win the church or Christians over to worldly activities.
In my next article, Is The Rise Of Secularism, A Death Threat To Christianity? I will give more detail on how the rise of secularism is threatening the existence of the church. But until then, according to I John 2:15-17, NKJV. “15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever”.
As a result of loving the world, the church is in a very serious crisis. In some churches, it is difficult to differentiate real Christians from non Christians. There are too many mere church goers who have stayed long going to church but at the same time the life they live cannot show that they have actually been going to church. There is no difference between the two groups, they all practice and live the same way. The only slat difference is that the mere church goers are seen in church or religious gathering, while the non church goers are not seen in church.
Over a period of time, these churches become gradually empty, because there is nothing to show the difference between the church and the world. Some of these churches become like a mere social club. They only gather in large numbers when there is a social activity to satisfy the deeds of the flesh. But when it comes to growing in the things of God, such as coming for Bible studies, prayer meetings, and other important church services that impart their Christian life, they are not enthusiastic about that, because they love the things of the world more than the things of God. As a result of this attitude, members gradually slip away from these churches and attendance become very poor. Even if attendance does not become very poor, worldliness becomes the order of the day, or these churches close down.
B). Poor or Little or no Evangelism
The second major reason for the closure of churches is the lack of vision to evangelize or convert sinners to Christianity. In every city, town, or village, there are the children, youth, and adults, amongst them are the poor, middle class and the rich. The strategies you put into place to win these groups and categories of people will determine the strength and future prosperity of the church. So, when you enter a church, in 99.9% cases, the dominant groups and categories of people in that church display the strength and prosperity of that church. Except otherwise, wherein you have dominantly poor people and children, with few relatively rich people then the prosperity of the church will be based upon the wealth and strength of these few relatively rich people. Therefore, in your evangelistic plans, you must strategize to win people from all these groups and categories.
The children are the future generation of the church, so leaving them out of your evangelistic plans means there is no plan for the church to exist after the youth and adults generations expire. The youth are the future leaders of the church, so leaving them out of your evangelistic plans means there will be no up coming leaders to take over when the adults or elderly people leave the scene, die, or are taken to nursing homes. The adults or elderly people are experienced people. They have gone through life challenges and understand what life is all about. They are the mentors for the youth and children, and therefore cannot be left out of your evangelistic plans. It is unfortunate that some adults and elderly people waste their years behind vanity, living a very bad and immoral life that cannot be exemplified, therefore they cannot be mentors.
As we have seen, evangelism must be strategic and very tactical. Some churches close down because of poor or little or no evangelism. The evangelistic plans you put into place, serve as an indicator of the kind of church you will have. No evangelistic plans, means no church in the future.
C). Poor Church Planting Strategies.
There is another important factor that is contributing to the closure of churches, and that is, poor church planting strategies. Before planting or constructing a church in an environment, there are relevant issues to consider, and they are:
⦁ The size of the population...
The size of the population will help you to determine the approximate number or seating capacities of the edifice to be constructed. It is good to dream big, but at the same time, you should take the size of the population into consideration before determining the seating capacities of your proposed church to be constructed.
⦁ The Residential Status of the population…
The residential Status of the population also help to determine the seating capacities of the edifice to be constructed. For instance, if majority of the population of that city, town or village only come to that place to do transaction or business and then return to their various localities, it means that you should be very careful in determining the seating capacities of the church to be constructed. Reason because they are not permanent dwellers of that place. On the other hand, if majority of the population are permanent dwellers of that place then it freely helps you to determine the approximate seating capacity of the church to be built.
⦁ The Location of the church to be built…
The location of any church is very much important, most especially, when it is to be newly constructed. To easily facilitate the movement of people to and from the church, it is always good for the location of the church to be visible and easily accessible to people.
⦁ Vision..
Vision is insight or dream. Every ministry must have a vision and every church must have a specific vision. Planting a church without a specific vision means the future of that church is charecterized by uncertainty. There will be no specific goals to achieve, and no focus and specific direction to follow. So before you plant a church, you must first work out and also write down the specific vision for that church.
⦁ Motive…
Motive, by definition, is a reason for doing a thing. The reason for establishing a church, usually have physical and spiritual impart on the church. Motives are good but they must not be self-center or selfish when it comes to church planting. In Christendom, and over the years, having dealt with many pastors, I have come to realize that some churches are planted for selfish reasons. For instance, some churches are purposely planted for denominational reasons, and that is , for their denominations to be present in that particular environment, which is very wrong. Churches are not planted because your denomination must be present in that particular environment.
Another wrong motive I have heard from some pastors is, they are going to plant a church in a particular city or environment for economic reasons. They want to plant the church to help them raise fund. Fund raising is good, but that is not the primary purpose for planting a church. As a result of this motive, when that church is planted, different tactics are most often used to squeeze money out of the congregation. The pastors that are desperate for money even go about reading their greed into God`s creed. These pastors become very manipulative in exploiting the congregation. This is what I call Exploitative Gospel Manipulators. They specialized in reading their greed or selfish desires into God`s creed or Holy Book, the Bible.
I have also heard some pastors saying they are going to plant their church in a particular place to purposely make the members of other churches to come to their church. This is a very wrong motive. Churches are not planted to reach out to those that are already converted to Christianity. The primary purpose for planting a church is vividly spelled out in Matt. 28:18-20, (NKJV), 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
The Command and instructions given in Matt. 28:18-20, explains the purpose and continue existence of the church until He comes, brings us to a very important aspect of this article, and that is, the solutions for preventing the decline of Christianity and the closure of any church in any part of the world.
IV. The Survey Questionnaire That Brings Out The Truth.
Missions is the heart-beat of God, and the Great Commission is his divine agenda for the church. Over the years, in my efforts to prevent the decline of Christianity and the closure of churches, I have discovered, tested, and proven some methods and measures that I want you to critically examine, test, and prove in your church or ministry. There are three sets of questions. The first set deals with Christian Growth, the second set deals with evangelistic strategies, and the third set deals with church planting strategies.
A). Christian Growth...
Whenever I`m on the missions fields, these simple questions help me to examine and evaluate the level of spirituality or spiritual growth of Christians and church members.
⦁ How long have you been going to church?
⦁ Have you gone through discipleship training programs? If yes, what lessons were you taught? If no, why not?
⦁ Do you read your Bible and pray every morning and evening?
⦁ Do you come to Bible studies and prayer meetings regularly?
⦁ Or how many times do you attend Bible studies and prayer meetings in a month?
⦁ How often do you fall into wilful sin?
⦁ Can you quote at least ten Bible verses?
⦁ How well are you applying Biblical principles to your daily Christian life?
⦁ Since you became a Christian, what have you really done for God or to promote the work of God?
⦁ What are your religious experiences like?
⦁ Or, could you kindly explain your religious experiences as a Christian?
Having asked these questions, you will be shocked to know that the church needs to do more to improve Christianity on the planet. When you compare the answers of most Christians to the length of time they have spent going to church, you will conclude that the church is indeed in a crisis.
Don`t be embarrassed to also ask church leaders these questions. In fact, they are the first groups of people to start with. This is what I do often, and it is usually shocked to hear their answers. On the other hand, this should not be an offence to you, if your church does not have a well plane discipleship program. This is an opportunity for me to work along with you to set up your discipleship program. There are some churches that don`t have a well plan discipleship program.
In other to help these churches, over the years, this is what I have been doing. This is a program that is meant for ministers, lay-leaders, and Christians or church members who wants basic training to be equipped in the various supportive roles in the church. The basic requirement for enrolment is a considerable level of intelligence. The program consists of three classes. The first is called Christian Growth, the second is Christian Ministries, and the third is the Advanced School of Ministry. B). Evangelistic Strategies…
In every city, town, or village, there are the children, youth, and adults, amongst them are the poor, middle class and the rich. The strategies you put into place to win these groups and categories of people will determine the strength and future prosperity of the church. In view of this, I usually asked pastors and church leaders the following simple questions:
⦁ Do you have an evangelistic plan? If yes, what is it like? If no, why not?
⦁ What are the strategies you put into place to evangelize to a) the children, b) the youth, and c) the adults or elderly people?
⦁ What are the strategies you put into place to evangelize to the a) poor and needed, b) the middle class, and c) the rich?
⦁ What are the plans you put into place to maintain these groups and categories of people in the church? This question has to do with periodic activities well calculated and strategized purposely to keep these groups and categories of people active in the church.
Failure to include any of these groups or categories of people in your evangelistic strategies, affect the future existence of the church. And failure to produce plans for periodic activities for these groups and categories of people reduces them to being dormant, or inactive, and even creates the atmosphere for them to leave the church. An idle mind is the devil`s workshop. In fact, every church must have a calendar of events, carefully organized quarterly, highlighting the periodic activities of these groups and categories of people in the church.
Because, the children are the future generation, so leaving them out of your evangelistic plans means there is no plan for the church to exist after the youth and adults generations expire. The youth are the future leaders of the church, so leaving them out of your evangelistic plans means there will be no up coming leaders to take over when the adults or elderly people leave the scene, die, or are taken to nursing homes. The adults or elderly people are experienced people. They have gone through life challenges and understand what life is all about. They are the mentors for the youth and children, and therefore cannot be left out of your evangelistic plans. In view of this, what are your evangelistic strategies? C). Church Planting Strategies.
Church planting is very good, but must be properly done to the glory of God. These simple questions, when properly answer, help a missionary or church planting team to put together a very good church planting strategies.
⦁ What is the size of the population?
⦁ What is the residential status of majority of the population?
⦁ What is the specific vision for the church to be planted?
⦁ What is the motive of plating this church?
Having considered these simple questions and answers, and then put together a very good church planting strategies, that will be fully implemented, there is no way for that church to fail or close down in the future.
To conclude this section, I will boldly say, a church closes down either by a very poor Christian growth strategies, as a result worldliness has taken over the church, or because of poor evangelistic strategies, so all the members have died or taken to nursing homes, or because of poor church planting strategies, so it is difficult for the church to keep existing in that area.
In view of my argument and the assertion that I have made, I do hereby throw the challenge to you, that the thousands of churches that are closing down or facing possible closure, if it is not any of these major reasons, don`t believe me. V). ANNOUNCING THE SEASON OF DEVOTIONAL GRACE!
It`s urgent! Let`s rescue the church. It`s time to act. Don`t allow the church to collapse before you wake up to take action. The world needs a revival, more than what happened during the early church. It`s the trustworthy laborers that God wants to use right now to bring this global revival to pass! Let`s wake up and be used by God! It`s time for the church to wake up and declare to the world that it`s alive, active, and powerful! Let`s wake up! Let`s wake up!! Let`s stand up and face the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
This is the Season of Devotional Grace! It`s the dawn of a new day, the emergence of a new era, the beginning of a new wave. This is the time and season when billions will receive the Gospel and devote themselves to the Lord God Almighty. WATCH OUT! DON`T MISS IT! This season calls for emphasis on:
⦁ Salvation..
Make sure people sincerely accept Jesus Christ as the Lord and Personal Savior of their lives.
⦁ The Word of God…
Make sure people get involve into diligent studies of the word of God. Make them to study the Bible and know it to the best of their abilities.
⦁ Prayers…
It is time to pray more than ever before. Make sure people learn how to pray, and let them pray diligently. It is time to pray longer, fervently, and diligently. So pray, pray until you pray or know that you have prayed. In other words, it is time to pray until you feel it that you have prayed.
⦁ Worship…
The time has come, and now it is for the true worshippers to worship the Father in Spirit and in truth. Teach them how to worship God in Spirit and in truth. Make sure they develop a personal relationship with God in worship. This is the time that every body knows God for his or her self.
⦁ Holiness…
Teach them, and make sure every Christian live a sanctified and dedicated Christian life.
⦁ Loyalty…
This is the time for believers in Christ to be loyal or committed more than ever before. Teach them about loyalty, and make sure they commit themselves to God and the things of God.
⦁ Signs and wonders, and mighty deeds…
This is the time for more signs and wonders and mighty deeds. This is the season for God to demonstrate his might and powers to mankind more than ever before. Teach them to have faith that God can use them. This is the Season of Devotional Grace! Let`s declare it to the world! Let`s live it and whole heartedly practice its principles!
