"I have an idea," I told Arthur and Mardi. "You see--"
Just then, Warren entered my room. "Vinnie, will you tell me a story?" he asked. "I asked Mom and Dad, but they're too busy going over bills."
Although I think Warren is a bit too old for a bedtime story, Mom and Dad still tell him stories. I guess they do it because he is the youngest child in the family, so they consider him their baby. To keep Warren happy and to avoid him saying, "Come on, Vinnie, Mom and Dad tell me stories!" I agreed to tell him a story.
"Don't tell any ghost stories, Vinnie," Mardi said. Last summer when we went camping in Montana, I told a ghost story about a headless cabinet maker that kept my poor sister up all night.
I chuckled a little and patted her head. "Okay, sport," I said. I leaned slightly forward and moistened my lip. "Okay, everyone, listen up, because I have a really good story tonight. Once upon a time, there was a teenage boy who lived in Cincinnati with his mom, dad, and three younger siblings. They all went to church together, and this teenage boy was madly in love with the preacher's teenage daughter."
"I have a feeling this teenage boy is someone we know very well," Arthur said with a grin.
"Right you are," I said with a dreamy smile on my face. "Anyway, this teenage boy wanted to date this teenage girl more than anything in the world, but her dad didn't want him to come anywhere near his daughter, even though he's known this boy for years and should know he'd never hurt her. The preacher was adding too many rules to right and wrong that are not found in the Bible. This teenage boy decided to remind the pastor that true Christianity is not about making up your own strict rules about right and wrong but simply about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and he decided to enlist his three younger siblings and all of the other young people at church to help him put together a play that will remind the preacher of what true Christianity is."
"We'd love to help, Vinnie!" Arthur, Mardi, and Warren exclaimed simultaneously.
"Thanks, guys," I said, and I hugged all of them. "Well, I'm tired. I'm going to go to sleep," I told them. Once we had all said good-night to one another, I lay down in my bed. I turned out being unable to sleep all night. Did I really have what it took to pull of this play?
