Gabbtha is the Hebrew word translated “Pavement” where the Roman governor Pilate delivered his fatal judgement against Jesus.(John 19,v.13) It was an elevated stone platform in front of Pilate’s palace, not the usual place of judgement so as to accommodate the Sabbath restrictions of the Jews in attendance. Not the usual place of judgement and not the usual kind of judgement either, but one taken by a sinless man on behalf of all of us with our mountains of sin.
A pavement is a hard place, a place where the rubber meets the road, so to speak. All of the years and events of the life of Jesus on earth to that point had been leading up to and preparing him for that central moment and the crucial ones to follow.
There are corresponding pavements in our own lives though on a much smaller scale, hard places where what we have professed to believe over the years is put to its most severe testing yet. It is part of partaking of and participating in the fellowship of His sufferings in order to know Him better.
So, though the Pavement is a hard place in a way we have never experienced hardness as we come under a kind of judgement, it can prove to be a very good place too, in a way we have never experienced goodness. Some quality is added to our personality that we didn't previously possess, some ability to relate that was inaccessible till now.
