Strategic Thinkers I
While the Jacobs of this world buy the future, the Esaus of this world sell their future. This is clearly evident in the negotiations that took place between the two brothers. Esau pleaded desperately, ‘give me the same red pottage’, Jacob demanded sell me your birth right. Jacob understood that birthright shall cook in the future and was a strategic investment to be acquired today. The Jacobs of this world have foresight and they make strategic investments. The Esaus of this world lack foresight and live for only today. If your dream is to live only for today, you shall end up selling your inheritance for the price of one night’s meal.
I read from the newspapers some few years ago that the Chinese Communist Party went for a congress and drafted a 20 year strategic plan for their nation. Having lived in a country where the furthest our political leaders could see is the next general elections which mostly is 4 years, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for how low some third world political leaders have reduced the faculties of human thought and foresight. That was part of my motivation for this series to help bring hope to the millions who are languishing under myopic leadership from churches, schools, communities and most importantly in the nations across the world.
If you have no purpose for your birthright tomorrow, you will end up disposing of it at a very cheap price today. A lot of young men and women are roaming around the streets of the world engaging in all manner of self-indulging acts to satisfy temporal pleasures without realizing the implication for tomorrow. Young boys and girls are smoking all manner of substances, drinking all sorts of liquor without any foresight of what might happen to their lungs and livers in twenty (20) years’ time. They ignore the fact that the lungs are not meant for coughing up smoke but are quick to blame God when they suffer from lung infections in latter part of their lives. The sheer number of abortion of potentials is overwhelming, you do not need to look far to notice the truth in this. Simply visit the graveyard across your city and you shall witness first hand dreams unfulfilled, books that were never written, songs that were never sang, inventions that were never invented, presidents that never were. You simply cannot sell your oil cheaply to Shell today and complain of a wrong tomorrow. Be vigilant when negotiating with a Jacob. You cannot hide that powerful singing voice today and expect to be a superstar musician tomorrow. Ignorance is no excuse, my brother!!!
The Jacobs of this world use what they have to acquire what they desire whiles the Esaus of this world use what they desire to sell what they have. In other words whiles the Esaus commit abortion of their pregnancies; the Jacobs go in for these children and bring them up. These children become mighty men and women within some few years and provide for the Jacobs. The Jacobs of this world invest today’s seed for tomorrow’s forest whiles the Esaus of this world sell today’s seed and expect a great harvest.
Neither success nor fruitfulness happens by chance. Before a seed develops to become a tree, it must be planted in the right environment, it must consistently be watered and pruned, protected from pests before eventually it bears its fruit. The process does not take place overnight; it takes several days sometimes months or even years for the seed to grow to the fruit bearing stage. Look deep into yourself and into your life, as God asked Moses in Exodus 4:2, ‘what is that in thine hand? And he (Moses) said a rod.’ Moses looked at what he possessed and it was only a rod to him but God saw an instrument that would be used to perform great miracles even divide the Red Sea. What do you have in your hand today? We are all sometimes tempted to despise the little gifts, talents, money even certain relationships we have in our lives but that should not be the case. Never despise humble beginnings nor despise your birthright today as Esau did because it couldn’t supply him with the dinner when he was sore hungry. Maintain that relationship even though you might not be benefiting from it today, once there is a prospect for greater returns tomorrow; it is worth the time needed to develop it. Greatness always begins with a seed, when God wanted to save the Israelites and show forth his power, a seed had to be planted in the womb of Zipporah, Moses’ Mother, a Moses had to flee, and a Moses had to go for training in the wilderness for 40 years. Before Joseph could serve a Pharaoh, and become a Prime Minister of Egypt, he had to serve a Potiphar, even in prison he had to serve. Before David faced off a Goliath, he had to face a bear and a lion in the wilderness. Before Elisha could divide the Jordan, he had to serve an Elijah and watch him perform this miracle, learn those lessons you have to learn in those early stages of your life. Do not cut off the training. You shall require the recipe when God grants you the whole world as your sphere of influence. Do not despise little beginnings, the years of training may be tough, but you must endure to the end. Success begins with a first step. Take that Giant Leap!!!
