Table of Grace

“And I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

Luke 22:29-30 ESV

“Why are we eating off the fancy plates?” my 12 year old daughter asked.

She glanced at our kitchen table and the beautiful cream and green plates lined with gold trim sparked her interest. The dinnerware had been meticulously placed in just the right spots and were adorned with linen napkins and the “good” silverware. In the center of the table was a large glass vase filled with bright daffodils. Surely this was a stark contrast to our normal routine of eating off paper plates!

“We’re having special guests for dinner and I wanted to use our fine china. We never get the chance to use it anymore,” I replied.

“Well these must be some pretty special guests! It looks like we’re having a party for these people. Do I have to dress up? I really don’t want to wear anything fancy, Mom,” my daughter continued.

Indeed our guests were very special friends and we were excited about their visit. However, the conversation with my daughter prompted me to think about our special dinner from another perspective. My daughter assumed she would have to dress up to come to the table because of the beautiful decorations. She assumed she would have to spend lots of time primping and getting ready for the event. In her mind, wearing her t-shirt and jeans probably wouldn’t be good enough for this occasion. She needed to do something to prepare herself.

I’m reminded that God invites all of us to dine with Him at His table of grace. At this special table, God extends His precious gift of grace to each one of us who will receive it. We can be assured there is always an available place for us at His table – no matter what we’re wearing, no matter what we’ve done, no matter how many scars we wear upon our hearts. Sometimes we get caught up in thinking we have to look, act, or talk a certain way to be worthy of dining with the King. But God wants us just as we are, flaws and all. He desires to have fellowship with each of us and to makes sure our cups and plates are never empty.

Come dine at the table of grace with your Heavenly Father. There is a place set especially for you!

“Lord, thank you for offering me Your gift of loving, life-saving grace. Help me understand You love me so much that I can come to Your table just as I am. I only need to accept Your invitation. Guide me in making decisions today that will bring me closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
