Miracle of leftovers
I stand here amazed with what God can do with leftovers. As I step in and dig deep into the life of Ruth I see the miracle of leftovers, a sweet testimony of how God took a widow who was down, dejected, clinging to what seemed like the glory of yesterday, a woman who had once given her the gift she woke up next to every morning, the man who put a smile on her face and made butterflies float in her belly, the man whose touch made everything alright, the man who took care of her and provided for her.
Now that the glory of yesterday had passed away, her hopes and dreams faded into the horizon of unexpected circumstances, she refused to let go of what seemed like leftovers from yesterday’s glory. She stuck to a woman who had a God she knew and believed in despite what life had thrown to her. Some may say the woman she was riding on leftover faith.
Ruth trailed the path of those who gleaned the finest wheat picking up leftovers, not knowing that her kinsman redeemer was connected to those leftovers, that he would find her because of the leftovers. Day after day as she bent down so low, picking up leftovers, she must have thought leftovers were her destiny. Little did she know that yes leftovers where her destiny but the God whom she had declared as her own God, because of the woman with leftovers from yesterday’s glory, was able to touch those leftovers and transform her destiny using those leftovers.
She herself was what seemed as a leftover from a dead husband, one with a rejected past as a Moabite. Unclean because of her background, untouchable even to a close relative of her deceased husband who refused to take her in, in fear that she might corrupt their blood line. Little did they know that what they perceived as leftovers had value, and that there was a kinsman-redeemer who would redeem Ruth and position her in the lineage of the King of kings, the Saviour, the Messiah. God had taken leftovers and transformed them with His mighty hand. Favour changed leftovers into royalty.
A gentile woman, perceived as deserving of leftovers, because of her nationality, desperate for a miracle, begging for a miracle from the Messiah, cried for a leftover miracle, believing that dogs can be filled by the crumbs which fall from the children’s table, refusing to be offended by the implication that she was only deserving of leftovers and indeed lo and behold, her faith in the power of leftovers enabled her daughter to be delivered from an unclean spirit! There are miracles in leftovers!
Jesus Himself took what seemed insignificant, five loaves and two fish and fed multitudes and this resulted in an abundance of leftovers which He didn’t order them to throw away but keep because He knew the leftovers were a testimony.
God is mighty, God is sovereign, God is able to take the insignificant, the leftovers, and the undesirables, He is able to take the little that you think you have and multiply it. He is able to birth miracles from leftovers and change your story from leftovers. Don’t despise what you have, do not despise your leftovers. Give them to the Lord and He will surely change your story. Surrender your leftover faith, your leftover dreams and hopes, your leftover resources and you will see the miracle of leftovers come to life. There are miracles in leftovers!
