Welcome to the third article in our series about how God Personally Speaks to us. In “Are You on Heaven’s GPS?” (Marriage category) and “Don’t Passover This Incredibly Healthful Recipe” (Healthy Living category), we presented a number of wondrous and delicious ways that God communicates with us. In this article, we’re going to discuss another way that God uses to help direct our lives.

“Be not forgetful to entertain strangers:
for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”

• God speaks directly to us through people we don’t know.

On a beautiful sunny day, we had just pulled into our driveway following a busy afternoon of running errands. Both of us had been grappling with a number of health issues for some time and looked forward to a bit of relaxation.

We were chatting as Ely brought our car to a complete stop. All of a sudden, a young man startled us by rapping heavily on the window on the driver’s side. We recall that he was very casually dressed. Our first thought was that he was looking for an address in the neighborhood and was lost. Ely cautiously rolled down the window and asked if we could help him.

The man started a conversation by asking if we knew what God had done for us, that He had died for our sins. At that point, we thought that he was walking from house to house to speak to people. We got out of our car and told the man that, indeed, we did know. When we asked him if he attended a particular church, he mentioned one located miles away. Curiously, he wasn’t handing out pamphlets nor was he carrying a Bible.

At the conclusion of our discussion, the man told us that God wants us to know that He loves us very much. After he delivered his message, the man simply turned and walked away. He didn’t go to any other houses on our block or on adjacent blocks. He didn’t look around at all. He purposefully headed back to the main street of our subdivision, continued walking, and finally disappeared from our view. We did not see a car.

The man’s welcome message came at just the right time in our lives. We are acutely aware that God speaks to His children in many different ways. This time, His message came from someone we did not know. Whether our visitor was a man on a mission for God or an angel delivering a message from God, we don’t know. However, it’s entirely possible that we were entertaining an angel unawares!
