Tent Dweller

“I long to dwell in your tent forever…” Psalm 61:4

In Nehemiah from the Bible, the seven-day Festival of the Tabernacles is referenced. During this time, the Israelites lived in temporary tents or shelters they made from tree branches and twigs. This special celebration served as a reminder of how much God had done for His people. He rescued them from Egypt. He protected them while wandering in the desert. When obedient to Him, God was there to provide shelter and freedom from slavery and suffering for the Israelite people. During this festival, God’s chosen people remembered.

No doubt, as they remembered and celebrated, the Israelites were filled with joy and gratitude for all they had been blessed them with. They listened to His Word. The people stopped their everyday routines and focused on God, praising Him for His provision and care.

Today’s key verse prompts me to think of how I yearn to dwell in God’s tent of protection forever. I want to stay in the safety of His shelter, away from life’s problems and obstacles. God’s everlasting strength, love, and sanctuary are surely things I cannot survive without.

“I long to dwell in your tent forever…”

But more importantly, I want to dwell in His tent so I am completely focused on Him, as the Israelites were. I desire to remember all the times God has guarded me from harm. I long to recall the countless prayers He has answered on my behalf. I want to remember everything about my walk with Him. In His shelter, peace finds me and thwarts away the distractions of life that threaten to pull me away from honoring and praising the Lord.

“I long to dwell in your tent forever…”

“Lord, help me seek shelter in Your tent of protection. Guide me to always remember Your blessings. Create in me a thankful heart, giving honor and praise to You forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
