“He’s dead…. And he’s never coming back” muttered Jahleel Nitz deep in thought as he gazed out his 14th floor office window into the storm that had engulfed the entire city in all its fury.
Jahleel’s trend of thought was interrupted when he heard a loud thud coming from behind him. A startled Jahleel gradually came back to his senses as he slowly turned his swivel chair around to see what caused the thud. Right across his new custom-made black walnut desk was his long time secretary and friend, Thomas, who had just dropped a stack of files on the floor.
As Thomas was picking up the files from the floor and arranging them, Jahleel started the conversation;
“Ah, Thomas, it’s you! You startled me. Are those the documents that I asked for?”
“What have you done with Jay? The Jay I know doesn’t get startled this easily,” replied Thomas with a smirk on his face, “but yes, these are the documents that you ask for. I’ve personally saw to it that everything that you requested are in there. It was anyway until I dropped them.”
“Don’t worry about it. It has been a long week for the both of us. At least in a couple of hours, you’ll be home free but I’ll still have to work through the weekend. My work here is never done” Jahleel said as he flipped through files that Thomas neatly arranged on the desk.
“Oh, stop complaining. If I had a desk like yours, I’ll move into the office and never leave again. You really do know to enjoy the finer things of life don’t you?”
“Yes, it’s a beautiful thing isn’t it? Personally made by the finest craftsman in all the land,” Jahleel replied brimming with pride, “Like I always say, we only have this one life to live, what’s the point of living if we don’t appreciate beauty for beauty’s sake.”
Although he would never admit it, Jahleel loves it whenever somebody would praise him for his impeccable taste. There are times when Jahleel would even go out of his to buy something he doesn’t need secretly hoping that he’ll get to show it off to somebody one day.
“I guess you have a lot of work to do, I’d better get going. By the way, don’t forget that you have an interview with Rachel Scott in an hour.”
As Thomas walked towards the door, Jahleel looked through the pile of files that Thomas has left on his desk eventually finding the file he that was looking for labelled “Rachel Scott”.
