Ellen G. White was born along with a twin sister on November 26, 1827. She grew up in Portland, Maine. With only a third grade education, during her lifetime, she wrote 40 books and over 5000 periodical articles. “Arthur L. White, her grandson and biographer, writes that Ellen G. White is the most translated female non-fiction author in the history of literature, as well as the most translated American non-fiction author of either gender.”1

Her book, Steps to Christ is available in over 140 languages. She is among the 100 Most Significant Americans according to the Smithsonian magazine because of her great influence on religion. She and her husband, James White were pioneers of what would later become the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

The subjects Ellen wrote about covered a wide gambit and included creationism, evangelism, education and health. She was actively involved in the founding of schools and medical centers. She was instrumental in starting Avondale College in New South Wales.

Ellen is known to have had at least 100 visions, experiencing the presence of angels or of Jesus. These were always in public and witnessed by more than one person. J. N. Loughborough, a Seventh-day Adventist pastor and her husband saw many physical changes in her while in vision. Many times, she would lose strength and then have almost superhuman strength in an instant.

One such change occurred in 1845, when Ellen swooned, without strength and then instantly had strength enough to hold the Family Bible, weighing 18½ pounds in her left hand, stretching out her arm for 30 minutes. She only weighed 80 pounds herself and was 18 years old.

During her visions, she did not breathe the whole time. Some of them lasted three hours. Her pulse continued normally and she always had a pleasant look on her face. Sometimes, doctors were allowed to test her while in vision.

The most telling of all though, is the fact that there was never any chaos going on around her or through her. No one was ever scared and the scene was always quiet and tranquil.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.” Matthew 5:9

Predictions – World Wars

Published in 1861, Ellen had a vision with can only be described as WWI and WWII:

“I was shown the inhabitants of the earth in the utmost confusion. There was war, bloodshed, want, privation, famine and pestilence, in the land; and as these things were without, God's people began to press together, and cast aside their little difficulties. Self-dignity no longer controlled them. Deep humility took its place. Suffering, perplexity and privation, caused reason to resume its throne, and the passionate and unreasonable man became sane, and acted with discretion and wisdom.

My attention was then called from the scene. There seemed to be a little time of peace. Then the inhabitants of the earth were again presented before me, and everything was in the utmost confusion again. Strife, war and bloodshed, with famine and pestilence, raged everywhere. Other nations were engaged in this confusion and war. War caused famine. Want and bloodshed caused pestilence. And then men's hearts will fail them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth."

WWI started in 1914 and ended in 1918. Peace lasted from the end of that war through the start of WWII in 1939. The vision also included the fact that more nations would be involved the second time. There were at least 28 nations involved in WWI. WWII involved at least 58.

WWII brought about unprecedented deaths, estimated to be around 40 to 50 million. In 1918, there was an influenza pandemic that killed 70 million people across the planet. Some scientists attribute this to the deprivation of the war.

The last part of her vision with concerns “men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth,” could quite possibly be referring to the invention of the atomic bomb, which put fear in the hearts of nations and was quite possibly what started the Cold War.

Weather

In regards to the coming deluge of hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural disasters, Mrs. White had this to say:

“The restraining Spirit of God is even now being withdrawn from the world. Hurricanes, storms, tempests, fire and flood, disasters by sea and land, follow each other in quick succession. Science seeks to explain all these. The signs thickening around us, telling of the near approach of the Son of God, are attributed to any other than the true cause." (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6, p. 408)3

What could be truer today? Global warning, according to most scientists, is the cause of natural disasters. Weather cycles are blamed for hurricanes such as Katrina and Rita.

A quote from Kerry Emanuel of MIT: “Just a tiny increase in surface temperature can have an extraordinary effect.” From his study published in the July 2005 issue of Nature, he states “that the destructive power of North Atlantic storms had doubled over the past 30 years, during which the sea-surface temperature rose by only .9 F.” The question is; how did the surface temperature rise in the first place?

Summary

Many of Mrs. White's writings are revered today. The infamous radio broadcaster, Paul Harvey often quoted her. She is regarded by the Saturday Adventist Church as a true prophetess of God. Her writings are revered in the church, especially her book Desire of Ages, which is quoted from often in sermons:

“Christ was treated as we deserve that we may be treated as He deserves. He was condemned for our sins, in which He had no share, that we might be justified by His righteousness, in which we had no share. He suffered the death which was ours, that we might receive the life which was His. 'By His stripes we are healed.”

Desire of Ages is third in a 5-book series, entitled “Conflict of the Ages.” It includes Prophets and Patriarchs, Prophets and Kings, Desire of Ages, Acts of the Apostles, and The Great Controversy.
