Matthew 23:15 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.
John 8:44 (part) For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. (Jesus speaking to the Teachers of the Law)
When Christ walked the earth the temple worship system designed by God and implemented by Moses was corrupt. In Jesus’ own words the administrators of the old covenant were Satan’s children. They followed Satan’s pattern of sinning with the Truth in plain view. God had created the law to make sin visible (Romans 7:13). But now the law and covenant of Moses and it’s system of sacrifice & worship was under the dominion of sin. So how was all this resolved on the cross?
John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
A Biblical fact was that Jesus was the perfect lamb of God. He was a sin offering for us. To perform a sin offering you need more than the lamb alone. You need the sinner, the high priest. It must be killed on approved ground also needed is an authorized and consecrated altar. The sin offering is described in Leviticus 4. Can the sin offering be compared form and function to Calvary? The answer would have to be yes, if Jesus was a sin sacrifice it would have to be acceptable to God and in agreement with His word.
Caiaphas the high priest unknowingly prophesied that Jesus would be killed to save many and John the Baptist declared him as the lamb. Jesus was brought before Caiaphas and he and the Sanhedrin were in agreement that he should be killed.
The ground that Jesus was killed on although not approved by the law of Moses for a sacrificial killing, was the only ground on earth approved by God for offering a chosen man. The ground was handpicked by God centuries earlier, set aside for the sacrifice of Isaac. Jesus even carrying the wood for His offering as His earthly forefather Isaac did.
Hebrews 9:11 But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.
Jesus was an approved priest (in the order of Melchizedek) qualified to enter the tabernacle in Heaven. Carrying His own blood before the most acceptable and holiest altar of all in Heaven.
So we have covered all of the requirements but one "The Sinner", Judas was the one who betrayed his friend and master. Handing the Lamb of God over to the High Priest to be killed. On the face of it seems to fit together, but Judas was not qualified as a conduit of our sins. Remember Jesus received upon Himself all of the world’s sins.
John 13:27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, "What you are about to do, do quickly."
This is the only Biblical record of satan entering a person. It seems Satan was oblivious to the folly of possessing Judas and handing the sin offering to the High Priest. Blinded by his own rage and not wanting to miss the opportunity to be a party to the death of his enemy. However by entering Judas he was to experience his greatest loss.
1 John 3:8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work.
John understood that sin began with satan. In order for Christ to defeat satan’s works he needed to swallow up and defeat sin. Although Judas could not properly offer the Lamb of God and take away the sins of the world. Judas possessed by satan was the most perfect conduit for the transfer of the world’s sins upon the Lamb of God.
But in saying this would this have washed satan clean of his sins? The mind of man reels with thoughts like this. But the offering of a lamb was only for the individual common man (Leviticus 4). Leaders, Priests and the Jewish community as a whole were excluded from benefiting from sin offering of a lamb, Bulls and Goats were required for a sin offering. By leading the administration of the temple it's leadership & it’s priest’s as his children satan was excluded from a sin covering as were all of his children.
Satan had swallowed up the old covenant not realizing that it was a poison pill. Jesus swallowed up death and sin and got the keys to Hades. He was given all authority in heaven and on earth. All of this was granted to Him at one time.
Leviticus 17: 3-5 Any Israelite who sacrifices an ox, a lamb or a goat in the camp or outside of it 4 instead of bringing it to the entrance to the tent of meeting to present it as an offering to the LORD in front of the tabernacle of the LORD—that person shall be considered guilty of bloodshed; they have shed blood and must be cut off from their people. 5 This is so the Israelites will bring to the LORD the sacrifices they are now making in the open fields.
Satan with Judas (an Israelite) as his cooperative avatar brought further defeat to himself and his children by offering the Lamb of God in an open field. Making he and the temple priests guilty of bloodshed. Permanently cutting all of the priests off from God’s people. So at the moment of Christ’s death the Levitical Priesthood was done away with forever.
So since the Lamb was a sin offering only available to us as individual common men. We should have fresh new outlook as we come to His table and remember His sacrifice. We should offer heavenward our thanksgiving and appreciation and lay hold that Christ is our sin offering.
Romans 2:29 (in Part) A person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person's praise is not from other people, but from God.
