As I lay in bed unable to sleep right away, my mind shifted into a mode of anxious thought. But there was something different about it this time. I wasn’t taking this line of thought seriously. True, the thoughts were flashing across the screen of my mind, being entertained on some shallow level, but there was a deeper current of peace running beneath them that gave the lie to the anxiety. It was as though I was responding to these thoughts by saying, “We’ll see how you stand the test of time, we’ll see if you’re around with such urgency tomorrow or the next day. And, in fact, they failed the test of time, they had receded into oblivion by the next day. Their hope had been to prod me into acting or forming conclusions from them about certain people at the time, and the time had passed. But the peace, the deep river of peace was still flowing....
