Jack’s Prayer
September 11, 2001

My six year old gently asked
“Mom why are you crying”?
To tell him less than the awful truth
Would be nothing more than lying

So I told him what had happened
A child’s version of the horrid sin
That thousands of innocents had been killed
By very, very bad men

I told him how our nation
Had been shaken to its core
That worst of all to stop these men
We may have to go to war

He said “You know, I have that pocket knife
The one that’s in your drawer
We should send it to our Army
They could use it in the war”

But his eyes were still questioning
He tightly held my hand
Then said “Mom can you explain it again…
I still don’t understand”

I said “Son, these men were evil
For them, killing is no bother
They don’t believe in Jesus Christ
Not even in God, Our Father”

His expression changed that moment
He was overcome with grief
“They don’t believe in Jesus”?
He repeated in disbelief

Thinking what I saw was fear
I tightly pulled him in
I told him to be very brave
Pray this would never happen again

He said “I know what I can do to help
I’ll work hard to do my part
I’ll pray right now and just ask God
To put Jesus in their heart”

No fear, no doubt, no terror here
Despite this child’s small size
A child of God, the words of faith
So simple, yet so wise

Kim,
I really liked Jack's prayer. A nice was to tackle a difficult subject. It seems sad that our kids have to live in a time when they have to know about such things, but isn't it amazing how much better perspective they have of life?
