Peace As the Ruler of Your Heart

Jesus is now the peace that binds the Jews and Gentiles together - "For he is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of partition between us, now therefore you are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God" (Ephesians 2:14, 19). The wall that once stood between the two nations has been broken down that they may be combined together in Christ, as one community having all things in common, while working to fulfill the common commission. It is now a peaceful union of which God has called believers of Christ into. But, if the members of Christ live in contention with one another, how can the world know peace, if peace is not in the church?

Peace is a powerful force. It has the ability to bring calmness into the heart, mind and spirit while in the midst of a troubled situation. Peace as a ruler of the heart acts in the same way of an umpire in organized games, and a law enforcement officer in the midst of a controversial situation. Their job is to keep things calm and in order, and so is the purpose of peace as a ruler of the heart. But if peace as ruler is not allowed to do its job without interference of the persons involved, if it is ignored, than there will be disorder and disturbance.

It is a serious and shameful thing for a believer of Christ to be the author of contention. One who carries gossip about others, or causes strife between others. Such person gives an impression that they are not at peace within themselves, nor is peace the ruler of their heart.

Peace as the ruler of your heart will keep you quiet in the midst of a mess, instead of the one promoting the mess. And if you must answer a strife starter, peace will be wise in his answer to calm a situation, not to add more fuel to the situation.

Although the promotion of peace may be your choice, it can be beyond your control to promote, if it is not the choice of others. Pray for peace within the church, that it will rule in the hearts of the members that dwell there. Where peace cannot rule, disruption and disorder will take over.
