Worship
The story of his life is recorded in a book named after him in the bible. One striking thing about him is the quality of life he lived before God. We are told in Job 1:1 that he was a perfect, upright and God Fearing man who also hated evil. In other words, he was a man of integrity, righteous in conduct, filled with reverence for God, with repulsion for evil - one who refuses to participate in anything that is repulsive or displeasing to God. His life was so pleasing to God that the LORD actually boasted about him before Satan [Job 1:7-8 and 2:3] but in spite of his quality of life, he went through a period of terrible and perhaps unimaginable trials. Job 1:13-19. It is his attitude at this period of his life that is my focus here.
He had lost everything he owned in such quick succession, but in spite of the unbearable trauma, the shock and ordeal he must have passed through, Job’s response reveals something very important.
Job 1:20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and
shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and
Worshipped...
Naturally, he was grieved as indicated by the tearing of his robes and the shaving of his head but he did not stop there; this scriptures says that he fell down upon the ground, and worshipped
He worshipped the LORD in spite of his challenges. He was a man whose reverence for God was not determined by his situation at any given time; to him, God deserved to be worshipped not necessarily because things were good or bad, but because of who he is, his place, his position, so although things were bad for him at this time, he was still able to offer worship to God in the midst of his pain. HE WAS A MAN RESOLUTE (unbending, unyielding, determined, firm) IN HIS WORSHIP OF GOD. This is the heart [attitude] of a true worshipper!
One quality of true worship is the ability to be resolute in worship, irrespective of prevailing circumstances or situations. True Worship transcends the circumstances or situations of life. This is the lesson from Job’s response.
The experience of Paul and Silas in Acts 16:23-34 also lends credence to this thought. After receiving some severe beating, they were thrown in jail and kept under tight security but inspite of their pain they lifted up their voices in prayers and praise to God. Below is a statement that carries a similar message:
“The deepest level of worship is praising God in spite of pain, thanking God during a trial, trusting Him when tempted, surrendering while suffering, and loving Him when He seems distant.”- Rick Warren (Purpose Driven Life)
Worshipping God this way indicates implicit trust [faith] in God that is not moved by circumstances and situations. One that does not doubt God’s character and intentions.
Worshipping God this way indicates that you are placing God above such circumstances and situations.
Worshipping God this way reveals humility of heart towards God. James 4:10, 1 Peter 5:5-6.
Worshipping God this way reveals the true motivation of your heart. Is it after God or his gifts?
