“Who are you?”

"My name is–”

"No, sorry, I asked who you are–not how you are called.”

We all need a sense of identity. The urge to know who we are arises way before adulthood. We search our hearts and seek role models. We need to know where we belong and what we’re worth. Stroke by stroke, we paint an image of who we think we are—or more often, of who we’d like to be. The degree to which the resulting self-portrait reflects the truth affects our fitness for life.

I wanted to be beautiful, lovable, and loved. Recognized for my character and intellect. In control. Known and understood. Needed. I searched in all the wrong places, taking the lines and colors to create my self-image from introspection, experiences, and other people. I was deceived, confused, and frustrated. Anger, bitterness, and hurt pride added black smudges. I felt useless. My portrait was a mess. Until I found Him. He explained that I couldn’t search my own heart, because it is deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9 ESV). He stated that it was better to take refuge in Him than to trust in men (Psalm 118:8). Above all, He said that I’m wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).

I surrendered to my Maker. His graceful hand redirected and smoothed the contours of my portrait. His mercy canceled the ugly stains of darkness. His loving words blended in light and painted multicolored details. In His Son Jesus Christ, I am a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). I have found my identity in His image. I am His masterpiece.
