It seems good to further contemplate the fact that human beings, being created on the sixth day according to the Biblical record, experienced their first day alive on the seventh day, the day set apart as sacred in which God rested. So at the foundation of all human history is a sacred day of rest. We as a species are literally rooted in rest and founded on and for the sacred. This sheds light on the truth of the statement, “One cannot find the experience of the ultimate without finding the sacred” that is, we have to go through the sacred to reach the ultimate, through something or Someone we can never reach the end or last of; so therein is a paradox. Though when we reach into a relationship with Jesus the Messiah we have reached the last, in a sense, because He said, “I am the first and the last, the alpha and the omega.” (last letter of Greek alphabet)

When I think of our being rooted in a sacred rest, I think of the fact that we can rest from our own efforts and labors to earn our way to heaven, or to justify ourselves to ourselves and to God, or to earn our own salvation because Jesus has done all of that for us redemptively on the cross in our behalf. We can begin each day from a sacred position of resting in the finished work of Yeshua the Messiah for us. We can remain and abide in and on that foundation for the “rest” of the day and night. Now all that we do can be done out of gratitude for that huge and indescribable gift!
