Aging is fearful because it reduces your control on your general ability to care for yourself and most importantly on accessing and managing your hard earned wealth. Those who are not psychologically and socially prepared experience despair when they age because of the imminent gradual declining strength and health. The spiritually matured believers know otherwise; they become a resource of godly wisdom and have a deep sense of the truth that a human being is a spirit with a soul, living in a body.
Getting Ready for Aging
It seems that mankind is so compatible with planet earth and this life that it is rather abnormal to think about aging and passing on to be with the Lord. Most aging parents in their retirement years hope and prefer to be cared for by their children in the comforts of their homes. This is normal because it may not be ideal to be ushered into the strange world of other senior citizens and be a statistics? While we all would like to be like the anointed one like Moses who was able to climb the mountain in old age to be with the Lord, it is likely that beyond eighty years, your health condition will compel you to join the passive and unprofitable population; to wait for your death.
The Onset of Aging
Some aging parents especially those who are not yet eligible for pension are living on their own insurance provisions which in most cases is not enough to cover their basic expenses. This means aging parents do need some form of support from their children when they retire from their profession or jobs. God gives us a counsel on how in Leviticus 19:32: “But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” Believers must therefore be psychologically prepared because living with elderly parents will change their lifestyle. For an example, there is need to have someone to look after their parents when they have to be away from home during the day or night. The challenge intensifies when aging is complicated by medical conditions that limit self-care. Caregiver must operate on empathy and utmost patience as indicated in 2 Timothy 5:2. Generally, elderly become like children and that could really be hard to minister to them with unreserved love. This means caregiver need to be in the spirit in order to love them unconditionally.
Actual Care for the Aging
Acts 6:1 takes us to the early church and how the issue of taking care was raised as a concern. Caregivers must regard themselves as being stewards in their loving and taunting tasks of cleaning and feeding the elderly parent at home or in old-age facilities. When ministering from this premise it is easier because you do so out of the loving fear of God which has many benefits:
1. Wisdom in acknowledging and serving God – God operate through believers’ faith. We must learn from Abram who later became Abraham, by simply obeying and trusting God because logic does not apply in things of God (Proverbs 1:7).
2. The fear of God is not negative – it is motivated by your knowledge that He has good plans for your social and economic prosperity which will extent to your children (Proverbs 14:26).
3. It is a criterion – through which God who is love and His patience is beyond understanding, protects those who are vulnerable like elderly. He therefore rewards those who submit to Him in faith and comply with His law of love (1 Corinthians 13:1 -8 and Luke 1:50).
Most believers will appreciate what the church has done with regard to empowering them through informal and non-formal education, which greatly changed how they live and relate to others. The subject of aging and caring for the elderly needs to be placed high in community forums calendars so that children could learn from young age to honor the elderly and readily offer them a much needed assistance. The Scripture is the living word of God which transforms and renews believers’ minds. To impact on communities that we live in, we have to act on the principles of godly love for it embraces ideal interaction of all people.
