Sometimes we encounter events in our life that we do not understand and so we do not know how to respond. My stepson Jason emailed us while we were in Myanmar that somebody has uploaded a picture that placed him in a compromising situation. We thought this is just another social media problems related to the youths today. We searched the internet and we have not found anything close to what he has been continuously egging on us.

When we returned to Manila, we were surprised with his strange attitudes. He has not slept for several days, talking about the internet problem. He approached me to ask for sorry because he did not consider me his father. I expressed forgiveness. Once, he went out, and when asked, he said he is going to “his house”. He acted strange and spoke of so many voices in his head and things alien to us. His condition changed from mild to worse as he cannot be controlled anymore.

We consulted a doctor, but during the first visit he tried to run away because he was afraid somebody is after him and wanted to kill him. Somebody told us those are symptoms of schizophrenia. The doctor we consulted told us it was tinnitus, an ear problem. The voices he was hearing are results of the ear problem. That could be the reason he does not want to be alone.

Me and my wife do not know what to do. We continuously prayed for God to intervene. Every Sunday we make sure that Jason goes to church with us. The good thing is that he himself sought prayers. He approached all the pastors and asked them to pray for him. My wife is a member of a prayer group and this is the time when he really prayed hard to give us understanding of what is happening and what to do. I have to go back to Myanmar and she has to be left behind to care for Jason. She cried at night and we have to pray virtually as we often do when we are away from each other – sending text prayers.

My first Sunday in Myanmar, I was assured that our efforts were not in vain as the preacher shared Philippians 4:6. We really should not be anxious or worry. Prayer overcomes all problems and peace will reign instead. True enough, after more than a month, Jason showed sign of progress and has returned to his old self. The improvement so far has lead us to believe he was healed. Praise be to God.
