Short Stories
Heather had the heart of an angel, and her laughter lingered like reverberating ripples on a quiet pond.
Summerville is a sleepy little town where everyone knows everyone. The biggest thing that ever happened, until Heather was killed, was the day poor old Charlie Eldridge disappeared. As usual, he made his morning walk to the drugstore, read the newspaper and smoked his sweet smelling, cherry tobacco, filled pipe. That was three years ago. Charlie was never seen again.
Mrs. Eldridge started drinking a few weeks after Charlie disappeared. She blamed herself because she made Charlie leave the house to smoke. The sweet cherry aroma made her sick. She was also known for telling him to just get lost if he couldn't stop cussing. None of that matters any more to me. All I know is, she ran my sweet daughter Heather down while on one of her drunken excursions looking for poor old Charlie.
In less than thirty minutes a jury found Mrs. Eldridge guilty of vehicular homicide, but sentenced her to only three years in prison. Such garbage. I was so enraged.
However, rumor has it Old Mrs. Eldridge's cell mate is some backwoods, cherry tobacco, pipe smoking, old broad; who cusses a lot.
Can I get an amen?
