TWILIGHT YEARS
It seems that many believe that life after age 65 is like entering into the twilight zone. Some sit around thinking about death and how they will die. Some, on the other hand begin a new life of excitement and adventure. It is easy to see who has the Lord and who hasn’t.
Jesus promises abundant life and that life does not end at retirement. Physical death can be an awful experience but spiritual death is much worse. My wife and I attend a church in the winter months filled with those of old age. Physical death surrounds us. Every week it seems someone is dying. No, it is not a depressing experience. In fact, believers have celebrations, not funerals. Think about it; believers in Jesus Christ don’t fear physical death they look forward to eternal life.
Letting my imagination get out of hand I’d like to spin a tale of my impression of life after physical death. We Christians can be pretty pessimistic about certain things and death is one of the top issues. What I think of is much more optimistic. You may think this is foolishness but scripturally I believe it to be fairly close to truth.
I am in a dream watching my life fly by. It has been a good life and I have no serious complaints. Now I see my physical life pass away yet I look the same, maybe younger, but the same. I am passing from one life to another and everything around me is beautiful. I feel great, no aches or pains and there are people and they are not flying around with harps. I suspect I am on my way to meet Jesus face to face. Does this all seem like fantasy?
When God created the heavens, the earth and everything including man life was good. Adam and Eve were placed in a beautiful garden, some call paradise. Everything within that garden was perfect. The fruit, vegetables and other food tasted to perfection. The river of life kept them eternal and they walked and talked with God on a personal level.
Now if I have your imagination going you can see the wonder of it all. Just imagine being able to walk and talk with Jesus in person, maybe a chat with Peter or Paul. You don’t have any needs to be fulfilled because they are being fulfilled immediately. We are in the place described in the book of Revelation only all is reality. The mansion is wonderful but the grounds and landscape are even better. Eternal life is good. I am singing praise all the time but only in my heart and mind. Do I have a heart or mind? Yes, everything is as expected only better. I am telling you, this is great. I am no longer a sinner; in fact, there is no sin here. Satan is not around and neither are any of his people.
Something is about to happen and everyone is gathering around Jesus who is sitting on a throne. I am told this is the Mercy Seat and a judgment is about to happen. The books are open amongst a mass of people, to many to count. If your name is written in the Lambs Book of Life (those who received Christ in human life) you went to the right side of the throne. Finding my name in the book I was about to receive some reward. I was thinking just being here was a great reward. Feeling sorry for those whose name was missing I began to wonder about the Lake of Fire. This however was not for me to see. I could go on and on about the wonder and the beauty but my dream was ending and waking up again to my twilight years made me sad. Thinking of my dream my mind awakened to some wonderful thoughts.
Death is not a bad thing for the believer; in fact it is something to be expected. Life in that place called heaven will be far better than what we have here. Jesus is there and all the unknown things about God will be revealed. We will be perfection and all around us will be beyond belief. I would be a fool to wish for death but as my time becomes closer it isn’t a bad thought.
Every day I praise God for giving me the gift of life through Jesus Christ. He has blessed my family and I to overflowing. I wish everyone could find the peace and joy that knowing Jesus brings. Jesus in our lives is beyond explanation? If you don’t know that feeling you must search harder.
I am by no means an expert but I could share some of what “old age” has allowed me to see. Think every day of what Jesus did for you on that cross. Pray boldly and sincerely, God is after all our Father and friend. Read your Bible every day; search for those things that are meaningful to you. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you through your life. Listen to His promptings. Love the Lord with all that is within you and expect great things to happen.
For you who are “oldfolks”, you aren’t dead yet and God don’t believe in retirement. Find a way to serve Him even if it is a small way. Don’t look toward physical death; look for eternal life with Jesus. My wife and I are heading toward a new adventure with a group of rv’ers who build churches. We look forward to what God has for us. Life goes on and retiring from God’s work is not an option.
