Ackerman’s book covers the years 1935 through 1945 when Germany was defeated. Jan Zabinski was Director of The Warsaw Zoo. He and his wife Antonina offered zoo grounds as safe shelter for Jews trying to escape the Nazis, hiding them in vacant zoo enclosures. Risking their lives, the Antonina and her husband helped more than three hundred Jews escape. “The Zookeeper’s Wife” is one more story of heroic deeds done by ordinary people to help victims of other people’s aggression.
