I met a new friend in recent days. Her beauty from within reflects in her glowing eyes. I can see past the sparkle to the spark that once burned with such pain and lingered for a time in seething reminders of poor choices and broken promises as her spirit cries out from the depths of her being. We caught glances more than once in a mirrored gaze and it was as though she knew somehow of my own introspection. In every movement she makes, I know what it takes to be here today. Fortitude bounces in her steps. As she holds her head high in delight of being, there is not an ounce of selfish pride but that of sustaining accomplishment.

Fire in her soul burns the dross as her beauty rises from the ashes of life and lost loves. In her voice, there is a song in waiting. Melodies dance off her tongue with just one word, “hello.” Her smile can light up a room with magnetic energy. In her childlike heart, she causes others to desire what she has.

If only they could see what I see. Jealousies would not be allowed to surface, only love and a need for what she contains.

I see a child who once watched the bumble bee in flight and became that creation with purpose. I see the little girl who listened to a lesson of how a butterfly came to be and she imagined herself forming wings from her very secret cocoon. I see a young lady who learned of the eagle swooping up and down in a dance for his lover. I see her becoming that eagle that soars high above any storm and watches from afar with a knowing all will be alright. She says, “This too shall pass…” and believes every word of such a simple quote as it becomes her solace.
I see a little girl with a jar of fireflies in her very dark room. As she gazes upon the flickering glow, her eyes receive pure light of God’s great creation with the simplicity of childlike wonder. As she fell off to sleep, she heard the voice of creation’s seed as it said, “Go to the hidden places where stillness shows you beauty. Take in nature’s splendor and imagine life and light mingling voices. Allow me to paint a rainbow upon your soul. Then sip of its refreshing mist and drink deep. One day, you will share with the world how love exists in every created living thing.”

I see the joy of a child returning in her heart and mind. I see the reflection of me. I see the reflection of you.

I lift a prayer for this beautiful being. Oh Lord, protect her heart and show her the way. Be that voice in her wilderness. Be her peace when midnight hears her silent cries. Enlighten her spirit to grow from every adversity and above all, continue to ignite that spark within so it may outshine anything that tries to snuff out her light.
Amen
