Hebrews 12:1-3.

There are a few things about this race that we must take note of.


First, this passage tells us how to run this race. In order to run this race we have to lay aside or, in other words rid ourselves of some things.
There are weights and there are sins that easily trap us, constrict us, and hinder us from moving forward.

Every weight is not a sin. It may even be a good thing, but anything that keeps us from growing in Christ is a burden that we need to let go of.

We are called to run a course that has been set before us.
The course that has been set out before us is passive. “What does that mean preacher?” You may ask. Well it means that it was outside of your control to decide the course of your life. Let me make that a little clearer. You may have been born with a sickness. That was outside of your control. How you live with it though is within your control.

John R. Wooden made this interesting observation “Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.”


Secondly this race is not a sprint, but a marathon
Run with patience means that we are to run with perseverance. We are to endure.
This race is not a test of speed; it is a test of endurance.
Will we finish the race?
We can look at races today, sometimes people get hurt and they simply stop running. They purposely get disqualified because they see no point in continuing. In this race we will get hurt. We will get discouraged, but we must continue to run.
And why you may ask? This brings us to our final point because we have a motivator.


Finally, this passage encourages us to look to Jesus
I’m not talking about a glimpse; I’m talking about focusing on Him. Many times instead of focusing on Jesus we focus on our problems. We forget that the servant is not greater than his or her master.

What can we see when we look to Jesus?
True Humility
Agape Love
Ultimate Victory!

All of which can be ours if we focus on Jesus Christ!
