Encouragement
There may be times when personal "earthquakes" shake our own lives. As we pass through them, it will stabilize and bless us to meditate on things that cannot be shaken:
The Love of God Cannot be Shaken!
In an era such as ours, in which the entertainment media has diluted the understanding of love by its immoral definitions, it fortifies believers to know that God's love cannot be shaken. There is much defined as love that is merely superficial emotion soon dissipated. An example of this is the recent case of a Hollywood couple married one day and divorced the next. Of course, this is an extreme example; even in Hollywood most marriages last longer than a day.
Sadly, America's divorce rate continues to skyrocket. Fueled by the self-centeredness of our times, the nation's divorce courts are overwhelmed. There was a time when a "cooling off" period was mandated by judges to allow couples time to reconsider if they truly desired going the divorce route. To avoid this, some divorcing couples traveled to the easy divorce state of Nevada, once considered the divorce capital of the nation. No longer; easy divorces abound almost everywhere in today's America. Astoundingly, there also are cases of children divorcing their parents. As declared in the Scriptures, the love of many shall grow cold.
Human love may grow cold, but the love of God cannot be shaken! Some one hundred years ago, the following words were found penciled on the wall of a cell in a lunatic asylum. The man who wrote them was considered insane and the words were found after his death.
"Could we with ink the oceans fill and were the skies of parchment made. Were every stalk on earth a quill and every man a scribe by trade. To write the love of God above would drain the oceans dry; nor could the scroll contain the whole though stretched from shy to sky." The author who wrote those wonderfully poignant words may have been institutionalized, but he understood that God's love cannot be shaken.
God's Plan of Salvation Cannot be Shaken!
During the Second World War, a navy chaplain was holding a Sunday service on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. During the service, one of the crew members was accidentally jostled overboard. Immediately, the quick-thinking chaplain grabbed the altar which had a cross attached to it, and tossed it overboard to the sailor. As the wood altar bobbed in the sea, the cross was clearly visible above the waves.
"Cling to the cross," the chaplain shouted, "Cling to the cross and you'll be saved!" The sailor clung to the cross and was saved.
The cross is the emblem of the atoning work of Jesus Christ. In the intervening millenniums since Jesus suffered on a cross to redeem humanity, the cross has become the recognized symbol of mercy, rescue and hope. It adorns our medical rescue vehicles, ambulances, mercy flights, many of our hospitals, and much more. This is true not only of America, but throughout most of the Christian world. Such meaning is affixed to the cross because of one quintessential event: Jesus Christ, the Son of God, sacrificed Himself on a cross to grant salvation to a lost race. His mercy rescues those who receive Him if they will cling to the cross and be saved.
