Acts chapter one begins with a fascinating verse written by the skilled hand of Doctor Luke. He talks about what he had recorded in his first book as all that Jesus “Had begun to do”. That meant that his second account was the continuation of all that Jesus had started doing. While He didn’t do it in person, He deputised the Holy Spirit and the apostles to do it. The disciples were His chosen ones but they had become His apostles, His sent ones.

This was a unique event. These men were the hand-chosen and personally trained disciples of the Lord Jesus. They had graduated from three years of a Bible school where Jesus was the principal and senior lecturer. They had hands-on experience and continual assessment.

Up until this point in the history of mankind, God had not lived in man. He had had the Garden where He walked with man; there was the desert and the Tabernacle where He had lived close to man but only the priest could get near once a year. There was still the separation of the curtain. Man could enter into the Holy of Holies under the Old Covenant.

Under the New Covenant, the one where Jesus was the Maker and Mediator, God would actually live in man. The New Covenant was signed by the blood of Jesus but it was effectuated by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus continues His ministry here on earth through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. In one sense we are the New Incarnation. When a person asks Jesus into their lives, what happens? They pray to the Father. They plead the blood of the Son. They receive forgiveness for their sins and the Holy Spirit comes to live inside them. His coming in gives them a new life and a new identity. Before the Pentecost event in which the Holy Spirit began His earthly ministry that just didn’t happen. God gets involved in your life in a very big way. The totality of the Godhead, the Father, the Son and the Spirit, are all in the mix.

The Father accepts you, the Son represents you, and the Spirit works in you to change your life and make you like Christ. Get your head round that one. We’ve had a church history of two thousand years; millions of books and the completed Word of God and we still struggle to fully comprehend it. Christ in you, the hope of glory. Small wonder that the apostles were struggling!
