Have you ever wondered why people are afraid to speak out about the subject of abuse? Why there so many myths surrounding the subject of abuse? Why others seem to be so critical of those who do speak out?

Jeremiah 22:3 Thus saith the LORD; Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the spoiled out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger.

In today’s digital society, an abuse allegation usually goes viral within seconds and is oftentimes sensationalized by the media like a wild fire making victims even more susceptible to public ridicule and shame. In essence, people have a need to persecute others without the benefit of fact or absolute intellect causing a public stir, resulting in divided opinions, and causing more harm to the victim. Contemporaneously, the subject of abuse of any kind is still a very controversial one and not too many victims are quick to share their stories in fear of serious backlash and being shamed by the court of public opinion.
Betrayal

Luke 21:16 – “And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and [some] of you shall they cause to be put to death.”

Victims of abuse are oftentimes victimized twice. To be a victim of violence, sexual abuse, or emotional abuse is anguishing enough, and gaining the courage to share your horrific experience can be even more painful especially when others don’t believe you or choose to turn their back on you. It’s not that I feel like people should keep things to themselves, but I understand firsthand what it feels like to share something with someone you thought supported you, only to find out you’ve been betrayed. A close friend stated, “I remember it taking me fourteen years to reveal to a family member some terrible things that had happened in my life and she turned her back on me and never spoke to me again. Afterwards, I was sorry I had even mentioned it,” she concluded. While some stories are not meant to be shared publicly, there is no pain greater than confiding in someone you trust and being betrayed, making you wish you should had never confided in them in the first place.
